How do I move to trash an application that will not close?

On your iMac, you can remove a software by doing the following steps:

Clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock or entering "Finder" into the search bar will both launch Finder.

Click on the "Applications" folder in the left sidebar of the Finder window.

Locate and click once to select the software you wish to delete.

To the Trash icon on the Dock, drag the program's icon.
As an alternative, you can use the drop-down menu that appears when you right-click on the program's icon and choose "Move to Trash".

Enter your administrator password if requested to confirm that you wish to delete the software.

By performing a right-click on the trash icon in the Dock and choosing "Empty Trash" from the drop-down menu, you can empty the trash.

Note: It's possible for some programs to have extra files that are not eliminated when you move the program to the Trash.
You can manually look for and delete the files in the Library directories or use a third-party uninstaller application to get rid of these files.

Apparently uninstalling InstallMac is a difficult one; see http://www.thesafemac.com/installmac-uninstaller-antics/ .

The only way is to do so manually. Carefully follow Thomas Reed's Genieo Removal Guide to completely rid your machine of the offending adware. Here is an abbreviated version of Thomas Reed's guide:

1. Quit Genio. Remove /private/etc/launchd.conf.
2. If it's not present, move on. If it is, trash it and restart the machine (See the warning in the full guide about overlooking this step).
3. Remove the following files, if present: /Applications/Genieo /Applications/Uninstall Genieo /Applications/Uninstall IM Completer.app ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer/ ~/Library/Application Support/Genieo/ ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib /usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
   
4. Restart the machine again.
5. Remove /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework and empty the trash.
6. Remove the Omnibar Extension from your browser. See full guide if you are unsure how to do so.
7. Reset the Home Page, and possibly default search engine for your browser.

Drag this programs from the Applications folder to the Trash. Then, empty the trash. This will ensure they're removed.

You can also try an app called AppZapper, which does a more througough job of getting rid of every last component.

Did you modify your Time Machine files in any way using Finder or the command line? This can cause this error. There's a program called Trash It that might be helpful if all you want is to get rid of those files.

Step1 Make sure the Mac computer is on, and close all programs. Locate your hard drive icon on the desktop. Generic, non-personalized systems will simply say "Macintosh HD" by the icon; however, if the user or owner has personalized their Mac's space, it may have a different name. Regardless, the icon looks the same: it appears as a small, silver metal rectangle that resembles a piece of computer hardware. Step2 Click on the "Applications" folder once you're viewing the contents of the Mac's hard drive. The Applications folder holds all programs that have been installed on the machine. Step3 Scan the list of available applications to see find the one(s) you seek to uninstall. There are two ways to uninstall the program once you've located it. One option is clicking while holding the Ctrl key once to select the file, a small menu will pop up. Select "Move to Trash". A second option is to locate the file in the Applications folder, select it, and drag it to the Trash on the desktop. Step4 Ensure that you've removed all files associated with the program, in case they all weren't located in the Applications folder. Use Ctrl + F and use the appropriate keywords to search the name of the program. Any findings will disclose the location of the associated files. Located each file in the designated folder, and delete. Step5 Know that you can also install and uninstall programs on a Mac using an actual program called an installer. Recommendations for the best such program, including directions for installing and uninstalling, can be found online.

First close any application that you may have open that used the photo...or that you used to view or edit the photo.
The problem could be that the application or photo was in use. Usually it won't allow you to delete a file that is in use by a program.
Once you are sure that the applications are closed. then click on the photo (if this is a Mac) and press and hold down the the apple command key (one on each side of your spacebar) then hit the delete key. The item should disappear...(it moves it to the trash)
Or you can just drag and drop it to the trash.

try closing all programs first, then go to trash can and hold "ctrl" and left click. Then click empty trash, this should let you can everything unless you are trying to trash an application that is still running. To find out if you are hold "apple, FN, ESC" it will bring up task manager.
