I'm guessing that you may have had a power surge that caused an overload, OR the machine went in to some sort of protective mode. With the newer machines, if you bend a needle, for example, the machine will lock up until you can fix that problem.
I'm also guessing that your repair person doesn't really know your machine very well. Usually there are indications that the motherboard is going. I've blown them and it has never happened all at once. You might want to get a second opinion from someone well known in the repair business. Good luck!!!
It didn't sound like a motor noise. It was a little " pht " noise and power and lights went out suddenly. No noises prior to this. That's why I thought it may be a fuse. If it is, is there a special fuse I should buy?
The fuse is a normal house fuse within the plug! Pull the plug out from the mains and on the underside might be a flap holding the fuse in that you can prize open using a fingernail or small screwdrivers! If no flap then remove 2 screws on the underside of the plug and the fuse will be inside the plug, race with the same amp rated fuse, probably 5amp!
