The basic operation of a combo freezer/fresh food section unit are the same.
Generally, the fresh food section does not have a independent cooling source. It gets its cooling from the freezer section. There is a air damper from the freezer to the fresh food section. This air damper is controlled by a thermostat. I suspect that either the thermostat is bad or the damper. Your air damper is wide open.
The other problem is, your unit is not designed to operated in a garage. If you have a warrantee or a service contract it will be cancelled by the service company. Your electrical components can short out or corrode from the drastic change in temperature. Your control board can fail due to static in the air or condensate.

You just have a simple operational and maintenance issue.
Neither your compressor or fans should run continuously.
First, you need to clean your condensing coil. You did not provide a model number so you either have a flat cooling coil in the front bottom, or a canister type in the back right hand side. This coil dissipates the heat. If it is plugged up your compressor and fans will run trying to keep up with the unit temperature settings. This can make a difference as much as 40 degrees. The toe plate, bottom front is either held in place with a screw on each end. If no screws, there is a clip on each end. Just pull and it will pop out.
Second, You only have only one cooling source and that is your freezer. The freezer will try to satisfy itself first before the fresh food section. If you set the temperature controls beyond the unit design settings your compressor and fans will keep running. Set your freezer to -2 or +2 Deg. F., and set your fresh food section to 35-40 Deg. F.
Third, Check your door gaskets. make sure there are no gaps.

There are several things to check:
1.) Door Gasket -Take a piece of paper. With the freezer door closed run the paper around the gasket. If you can do that, then you are not getting a good seal. Repair: Clean the freezer door gasket with soap and water. While still wet, take a hair dryer and a spatula, going around the gasket, heat the gasket while pulling the gasket out to expand it. Note: This only solves the problem if there is frost in the front area of your freezer.
2.) Freezer fan not working - In some cases, The freezer fan helps to prevent warm air from getting into the freezer.
3.) Food Storage - Make sure you do not overload the freezer, and that the food product is inside the bounds of the racks.
4.) Fresh Food Section Air Vent Wide Open - This is your probable cause: Heat goes to Cold like a magnet. When you open your fresh food section door and then close it you are forcing warm air up the vent that goes to the freezer. You probably have a broken air vent assembly.
I see that you are looking to see what turns on the defrost timer and evaporator fan on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FGHN2844LF2. Your appliance comes equipped with an Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC). To activate manual defrost, simultaneously press and hold the Fresh Food up (+) and Fresh Food down (-) keys for 5 seconds. A "d" in the freezer temperature window and "F" in the refrigerator temperature window will display when the heater is activated. To deactivate manual defrost, simultaneously press and hold the Fresh Food up (+) and Fresh Food down (-) keys for 5 seconds. A "d" and "F" will be displayed until the defrost cycle is complete. This is normal. All commercfial freezers must defrost 3 to 5 times a day, or they will freeze over at the coil and then stop freezing. A timer in your freezer turns off the compressor and turns a heating element on for 10 to 15 minutes. During that time the coil heats and melts frost from the coil. Usually within 30 minutes the temperature will briefly rise to 20 t0 25 degrees F and then quickly drop down to 0 degrees F. The food rarely defrosts in this short period of time..
Try this... unplug...
take everything out and defrost the freezer
(go get a couple bags of ice and a big clean garbage can so you can keep the food cold)
you can defrost the freezer faster with a hair dryer
when you finish turn t'stat to high setting... put all food back in and dont overload and dont block any air vents (if they are located at top dont overlaod)
plugg in wait 24 hrs...
if you dont notice a difference let me know...
You may have to heat up the surrounding of the refrigerator so that the unit will work properly. Some manufacture have tempoerature limits that the units can operate in unles there's additional equiptment installed on the system. not necessarily, is it maintaining temp? all food staying frozen? especially ice creams if stored in there. most newer freezers displace the heat generated while cooling the food through copper lines running through sides of unit, helps to cut down on air temp differences between the inside (0 degrees) and outside temp to prevent moisture and possible condensation causing premature rusting of unit
