hi Bill.
The pump may be belt driven, motor driven or have its own electric motor. A burning smell coming from the washing machine during or after the spin cycle can indicate that the drain pump has become seized, preventing it from turning.

well, The transmission hears turns 2 ways. One way to wash (which causing the agitator turn) and the other to spin. The motor also turns 2 way. If you say it washes fine and in spin cycle is where you get burning smell, maybe of many things: Bad transmission locking up motor causing the burning smell. Possible bad motor trying to start (bad start winding or capacitor). Maybe something simple as something getting stuck in between outer tub and inner basket. Something you can do to check the motor mechanically is disconnect the belt from the transmission pulley and put the time on spin cycle. If the motor shaft/pulley spins on start up then the next thing to look into is the transmission or something catching it from spinning. Check the inside of the washer, if the basket is the type with small holes, make sure there is nothing stuck in any of the whole. Iv seen small screws getting lodged in there and preventing the basket from spinning. You can start by doing simple checks like this to start narrowing down things. Open the front panel form the washer and see if you have access to the belt, if not then you have to tilt the unit to get under it. if you have money and dont want to bother dealing with the unit then replace it. But i like investigating things first. go with whirl pool if you replace it. let me know if what you find if you do make these checks.
There's a number of reasons to smell burning after a washing machine cycle. It's a 220V appliance, so if it short's out it will cause problems. It's more likely the motor being overloaded making it hot and causing the electrical burning smell, or a short that's overheating something electrical. Check to see if the belt that spins the whole barrel is melted or worn anywhere. Inspect the wiring that's attached to the system that engages spin, which is different from agitation by the big tower. If these both check out, an trip to the Maytag Man might have to fix overloading motors or relays, or switches, if anything turns up in your search for the source of the electrical smoke. Ozone is what you are smelling, FYI.
If the machine will run in wash but not in rinse then I would check the motor first. If the motor is getting too hot toward the end of the wash cycle it may very well have a fault in the foward windings. When in the spin mode the motor is reversed so may continue to operate.
Yes I happens to work a lot with this type of machines. Normally when the spin is too slow the problem rises form a week voltage, motor winding too week for the velocity. I means that the winding in the motor might have gotten burn and weakened the winding to the point where when the motor ask for more voltage to spins the housing the winding heat up. That is why you smell as something burning. The system in this type of machines is not complex but tedious. If everything else work in the machine then it is the motor.
