I have a laptop, replaced hard drive, disk drive, and it takes forever to come up, once I get online, it stops working, can't open my e-mail. Thinking of getting new laptop but need it for e-mails, web search, FB HELP what is the best buy for a Senior?
If all you need it for is e-mail, web surfing, facebook, you really don't need a full laptop, a "netbook" is plenty, and will be cheaper.
If you want a real laptop, my suggestion is to visit a store with a selection and try the keyboards. The keyboard is more important than the make in my opinion. AMD processors are cheaper, and plenty powerful for your use; save some money.

Do you have any kind of download accelerators installed? These will compress online multimedia content, degrading the quality and clarity of the picture.
SOURCE: My laptop does not recognize the hard disk after formatting;
Actually, have you tried running the Windows install yet? When you're in Windows Setup, it should recognize the hard drive as a device, even if it's not formatted or formatted properly.
Try going into the BIOS for the laptop (it might be called Setup Menu or some such - you should see a prompt for hitting a key like Del to get there) and look and see if the BIOS recognizes the hard drive. If the BIOS doesn't see the hard drive, then the problem might be with the laptop and not the hard drive.

Solution #1 is grossly incorrect. The S.M.A.R.T. mechanism is software/application/drive content agnostic. It is a firmware-based predictive failure feature. If the S.M.A.R.T. test returns a certain bit, then the drive is degrading and in need of replacement. If the disk is under warranty, then it generally qualifies for free replacement. If it is not under warranty, then you can run diagnostics such as http://www.santools.com/smart/unix/manual which can sometimes identify the specifics. Sometimes the problem is transient, like the disk was powered on/off too many times in a short amount of time, or the temperature is too high.

I agree, take a Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM drive for laptops. The standards for the connections are same. So that would not be a problem. Make sure its for laptop and not the desktop one.
