According to this link it does have built-in Wifi. Check here: http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/7039.htm
There is a link to download the user guide as well so you can figure out how to turn the Wifi on and off. Your Wifi adapter might be disabled or turned off or need drivers installed in order to work. Download the user guide and necessary drivers using a working computer or laptop. The user guide should show you how to troubleshoot why your laptop Wifi is not working...

If you go into the device manager and click on Network adapters, is there a wireless adapter listed there? Are there any items that have an exclamation mark next to them? If you answered no to both of the above questions, then there is no wireless adapter installed. You can purchase a PCMCIA wireless adapter rather inexpensively online. ($25) It will just pop right into the PC slot on the side of the laptop.

As far am I'm aware the Advent 4211 netbook is not able to connect to the Internet 'on it's own' as such. Unfortunately the word 'netbook' has been advertised with this product in many PC World stores giving the wrong impression.
The best and easiest way would be to look into mobile broadband solutions.
Of course, it wouldn't do any harm to try out your Vodafone USB on their laptop to make sure it works well enough! :)

HP very recently has had problems with the actual wireless hardware. I found out when troubleshooting a friends HP laptop. Check for information on HP site to see if there is a recall.

It may be that the usb ports have died but before we get carried away lets see if we can check some other things first.
1. disconnect "ALL" usb devices
2. shut down and re start your laptop
3. double check in your hardware control panel that there are no exclamation marks next to any hardware
4 if there are any problems list in your hardware fix those first
5. if you don't have any usb hardware listed go get the latest drivers from the manufacturer and install them.
6 If you don't have any hardware listed and cant install any drivers for them then yes it is more than possible that the usb ports are dead
This could go as far as a new motherboard to fix but only a qualified laptop specialist could give you the answer to that and certainly not over the internet.
If though you got this far without too many problems
1. insert only a pen drive into one of the usb ports
If it shows up then move it to another port until you have checked all ports. If all is good then it is quite possible that you were overloading the ports !
This is common in laptops and my suggestion would be to get a decent quality usb hub that has its OWN POWER SUPPLY.
Anything that you can plug into that will reduce the load on your laptop ports and increase the life of those too.
Note that some hardware does not like hubs.
