Unfortunately, Schwinns after 1982 have no log book to track serial numbers. The serial number may include the manufacture date as part of the number.

Schwinn Bicycle Production Codes

According to this gentleman's chart, the bike was produced in Chicago during June of 1978. I suspect you would have to contact Schwinn Chicago in order to find information on the bicycle with that exact serial number. Good luck!

I bought a bike frame today and I am trying to figure out what year and model it is ! It has a Schwinn plate on the front and the serial number is Y6500017 .

Schwinns often have a date code on or next to the head badge that you call a plate. That will tell you the month and year of manufacture. Google Schwinn date code" ( or serial number) for more info, but it is important only for curiosity to know model. For more info see my tip: How to determine the year value etc of your bicycle

Value varies greatly depending on physical and mechanical condition, and the Traveler is not a terribly collectible bike. Also, that is not a valid serial number, but rather a date code, translating to the 324th day of 1980 as the date of manufacture.

I have a Schwinn ladies deluxe varsity bicycle with the serial number HU516988. Can anyone tell me the year (and month) it was produced, and whether it was made in Chicago or in Taiwan?

I don't know that the Varsity was made anywhere but Chicago, but could be wrong. A brief search tells me yours is newer than 1982, but I don't have the time to pin down exact date. Some Schwinns have a date code on the head badge or head tube and a separate serial number. Google "Schwinn serial number" (or date code) and do some research yourself, or check this link for more info:

Schwinn skipper serial number 5h08345. When and where was it made?

60's, probably Chicago. Schwinns have a date code on the head badge that will tell you when the frame was made. SCHWINN DATE CODES For more info on value, etc.: How to determine the year value etc of your bicycle

Schwinn bikes made in the last several decades were made at many different overseas factories, and serial numbers varied. Look for a date code on the head tube or badge (where the fork goes through the frame. That is more helpful for date of manufacture. Would be helpful had you told us the model of the bike.
