My heater core is leaking. No heat and major antifreeze smell when heat turned on. I've changed out every other component of the coolant system myself (new radiator, hoses, thermostat, water pump, coolant reservoir). Trying to avoid the outrageous price a shop will charge me for installing a $50 part. Need instructions for heater core change with pics if possible (I'm not very savvy on the technical terms in the online manuals). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
Check the sensor and wiring from it for a short.
Hope this is an easy fix for you.

A shotgun approach to repairs can really rack up the bills.
If your symptoms are loss of water and you have replaced the thermostat, you more than likely have an issue with steam. And that steam more than often comes from a bad head gasket. Most head gasket gasket failures seem to be confined to the water side initially, but let it go on bigger damage will occur.
You can buy a litmus test strip to dunk in the coolant. It will indicate if there are exhaust residuals in the water and thus a gasket failure.
However it may just be something simple, given that you have just about replaced everything:
have you given the radiator a good hosing inside and out?
is the radiator fan running when it should be?

Visit the autozone.com website and register the car information. It doesn't cost anything and you will have access to an online repair manual for the car. The steps for replacing the water pump should be available there. It's a handy resource. Hope this helped and best wishes.

If the top hose is hot and the bottom is cold, your definitely not getting circulation. You,ve already done alot of work to this vehicle so you have pretty much answered your own question. About the only thing left is the heater core. Of course, I dont want to be the one to tell you it is definitely the heater core because obviously I am not looking at the vehicle. But If i was a betting man, thats where my money would be.
