after installing a new cartridge you need to open the program for your printer tray and reset your cartridges so that the printer and pc reconize the cartridge is full
The ink in those cartridges is alcoholic in nature and evaporates over time - hence the expiration date. If just purchased I would return and exchange.
If it is only printing the top half then it is quite possible you are running out of ink. Try printing on only black and see if this works. When is the last time you replaced the colour cartridge?
