Two issues: 1) When I turn on the TV after a couple of seconds, instead of the TV starting, I get a notice stating "searching for connection" and the TV never shows a picture or sound. 2) When watching TV it'll suddenly go blank and silent. Sometimes it'll come back on and continue fine, sometimes it continues going off intermittently and eventually will stay blank and no sound. Sometimes when I turn it back on it will remain, but most often I'll get the message that it's searching for a connection.

Most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. It's possible that it maybe a bad capacitor or transformer on the power supply board. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
But, I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, if you can find and purchase a Service Manual over the internet; It will help you diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20. And most cases the new part cost less than $15.
I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

It sounds like you have a bad solder connection on the video board. Most likely, you will have to take the set into a shop and have it fixed unless you are familiar with electronics.

This is a sort of slow start up and it can be a fault in the Power supply as the voltage builds up or in the display drive section where the fault seems the same as a circuit trying to act upon. There is a defined failre but only if the observations of the voltages are taken out and confirmed. http://www.fixya.com/support/r6055091-slow_start_up_circuit_cold_starting
Start with the Power supply and check if the filter and storage capacitors are topped up with the designed voltage, if there is slow build up then check the reason if in the drive for poor swithching or a poor capactior.
Next check the same with the main board , look for IC's getting warm , if so use a freeze it to cool and set the picture to start up therby confirming the IC. repeat check, observe for heat and changes in voltage.respond
