SOURCE: older mecury wont pump water

Never had a good water pump caviate. You may have a problem with your powerhead causing exhaust to enter the cooling system. This could be any thing from the head gasket beginning to fail, the exhaust cover plate and baffle having gasket or corrosion issues or even the powerhead base gasket or water tube "O" ring being rotted out from around the inlet pipe.

Before you do any of that-- pull the drive off the motor, drop it in a bucket of water and spin it with a big drill. If the key way is in correctly it should spit water vigorously out the outlet.

When you put it back on, put liberal grease in the pump outlet and check the "o" ring burried down that hole. Then find the tube guide and put it on the pump at the outlet. This will make sure the tube actually goes in the pump.

So now you are sure the pump works and the tube is in the pump, with this knowledge-go on the search for the real problem. I would first drop the exhaust plate off the side of the motor. Take the baffle to the wire wheel and clean the scale off it and hold it to the sun look for pin holes. Inspect the gasket areas for burn outs. If the gaskets are in good shape- leave them alone and put some sealer on the clean side. You can do more harm than good by scraping a perfectly good gasket.

Next would be pull the power head. This will give you a look at the water tube where you can check for pieces of old water pump. They get stuck where the water tube from the pump enters the power head base. Also see if the tube has been pushed up into the power head a blocked the water flow. If so just push it back into the pump.

Last is the head gasket. Just put in a new one. Look for burn outs and carbon tracts into the water jacket.

If none of this works- I don't know what to tell ya.

1993 Mercury Outboard Engine. Why is it not peeing?

Question edited for clarity, but needs engine model and HP.
Question moved from Dishwashers.

Some ideas here. Check that the impeller spins (the drive is okay), but it sounds like you have blocked passageways.

MY classic 1976 Austin mini tends to over heat when outside temp is over 35c thermostat replaced with a safari one Radiator good WHY???

Impeller in the water pump worn resulting in decreased pump rate. Replace water pump. Also check the radiator tubes. They may be partially plugged and need to be rodded out. Radiator may look good, no leaks, but if passages are plugged it wont cool properly.

Coleman outboard overheating

You should change your impeller.
It is located at the top of the gearbox, around the vertical engine shaft.
First, disconnect the gear control. Underneath the steering bracket, you'll see a long nut with a counternut. ( Maybe you'll have to shift FWD or BWD to get better access ). Loosen the counternut 1/4 turn and then turn the long nut up ( 2 open box wrenches 10mm ).
Then remove the 4 bolts holding from lower to upper the gearcase ( just above the anti-cavitation plate )
The gearbox should drop down easily.
Then remove the 4 screws of the waterpump ( top of gearcase, around the long vertical shaft ). Lift the waterpupp housing, you'll get the impeller.
To reassemble the waterpump, grease the cup in the housing with PTFE or silicone grease, and while pushing the housing down over the impeller, rotate the shaft clockwise.
Reassemble all the rest in reverse order.
Check and adjust the gear shifting...

1982 55 yamaha outboard ,water not coming out the water pump hole in strenght

First thing to check: Disconnect the tiny hose between the check outlet and the engine. Disconnect it at the engine side.
With an airgun, blow in the check hole from outside to engine side.
With an airgun, blow out the engine connection.
Start the engine, check waterflow out of the engine connector. If water, reconnect the hose and check the water at the checkpoint.
If still no water at the engine connection: replace the impeller!

I was wondering how much trouble it would be to change out an impeller on a esrly 80's 110 hp evinrude tracker outboard engine.

Impeller? or Propeller? Propeller is just a nut with a carter key holding it on.

Impeller, or water pump? It isnt too bad. You have to take the lower uint off. There is a roll pin in the linkage going to the forward/reverse mechanizm. Then take out the bolts and drop it down. It has a shaft that comes with it out of the engine. Then the water pump is bolted on that shaft. Check the seals under the pump and the oil in the gearbox for water. Mine was bad and pumped water into the gearbox and oil up and out. Then froze and busted.

I have a 1980 evinrude outboard motor. It is overheating. We have changed out the water pump, took the thermostat out and checked it, it works fine. What else could it be?

I could possibly give you a better explanation if I knew the horse power of the outboard. However hear is what happens to most "tiller" operated outboards. Water pumps are made from a pliable soft rubber which by the way needs water to lubricate it even if you just crank it over to check something, or fire it up for a few seconds on a dry impeller will destroy it. Most often a few pieces will fly off and enter the water cooling system and then lodge in one of the small passage ways blocking water flow. When a new impeller is installed the engine runs pumps water and overheats.
