I have a Haier mini fridge that is not working. I have taken the P6R8MC relay off but don't hear any rattle. Does that mean the compressor is probably bad?

Why does it click on for a few seconds and hums slightly but then clicks back off without turning compressor on?

That is what is sounds like but let's check. An overload relay will fail due to wear, a short or a bad compressor will knock it out. There is a rare occasion you may purchased a bad overload relay, but that is rare. The rattling of the overload relay is a good indicator it is bad, however it does not have to rattle to be bad - inspect for burn marks as well.
The clicking sound is the overload relay trying to start the compressor. There will be a pause and then click trying to start the compressor again.
Remove the overload relay component and expose the three pins on the compressor. Using a multi- meter, measure the Ohms across the three pins. You will get one high Ohm reading and two lower Ohm readings. If the two lower readings add up to the higher reading the compressor is good. Make sure the green ground wire is securely grounded. It could nock out the overload. Check for loose connections. Replacing a compressor is a major repair. The cost will exceed the purchase price. Rule of thumb; "If the cost of the repair is 1/3 or more of the purchase price of the unit, Buy new".
As a retired Sears service technician, we considered these units
as throw-a-ways due to the high cost of repair. If you had a service contract we would replace the unit rather than repair it

SOURCE: Kenmore (253.51399104)side by side making buzzing/humming noise

It will rattle slightly, this is normal. The ones that are burned out will sound like they have gravel in them, you can defininely tell something is wrong.
The problem with diagnosing Kenmore fridges with this problem is that there are different manufacturers. Yours is built by Frigidaire and probably has a Tecumseh compressor. We find more failed compressors with the Tecumsehs than we do with the models that have Embraco compressors. The models with Embraco's generally have more relay failures.

You should not hear the buzz/hum at startup. You will need to replace the compressor, which will be replaced at no charge to you if it is less than 5 yrs old.
If it is older than 5 yrs, you can have it replaced, but it will be almost as expensive as a new fridge. You can buy an aftermarket start device called a 3-in-1. This has a start capacitor built in to give it a little more boost on start up. I don't recommend using them unless it is a short term fix until the compressor can be replaced or if it is out of warranty and there is nothing to lose anyway.
Thanks/Mike

SOURCE: refridge hums then you hear

it sounds like a bad:

  •   start switch (on the side of the compressor) or
  •   compressor itself
  • the start switch clicks  off usually when the compressor is pulling too many amps or the compressor is overheating. if the compressor is not even running then its probably not overheating.
  • so either the compressor is pulling too many amps (bad compressor) or the start switch is bad and cannot handle the amps required to start the compressor.

SOURCE: clicking near compressor but doesnt

since your mini fridge is under warranty, have a technician come and take a look at it. i would say it's the damper.

SOURCE: Mini Fridge not working MCBR445

Compressor is in a locked up/ no start condition. the overload cools enough to reset and tries to start it again and kicks out on amp draw, then the whole cycle starts over again.

MAGIC CHEF MCBR 360S Mini Fridge and compressor is not working or cooling. No sound at all from unit. See more details below please. Thank you!

The compressor being hot means it is getting power to it. 2 possible problems. The compressor is locked up internally (too expensive) or the start relay or overload could be bad (approx cost for both parts about $45). You have to decide if you want to risk $50 and still find out you have a bad compressor. Most service techs have a direct test harness to hook up to compressors and make them run without the start relay and overload but not everyone knows how to do it properly.

I have a haier mini fridge model #HSW02C when i plug it in it humms for a few seconds then it clicks then i hear nothing could this be the relay? any sugestions?

I would say that the motor is humming because it is not turning and the click is when the overload control switches the power off. It may be a start run capacitor blown out but it may be a seized compressor motor. have a fridge mechanic check it out.

Had the compact refrigerator for about 4 years now, then it suddenly stopped working.all I hear is a click sound about every ten minutes. Mode; # ASE27W, need assistance......HELP!! I Love my compact refer.

Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. The relay is a small usually black cube shaped electrical part plugged into the compressor or wired to it nearby. It may appear burnt or rattle when shaken if it's bad. The two connections should show continuity with an amp meter. If it's good then it's most likely the compressor causing the problem.

Refrigerator stopped cooling.

It was Skeeter140's diagnosis and repair that he suggested for a previous poster. You saved me a few hundred dollars in frozen foods and kept me from buying a new fridge. All for free advice and a $50 part. YOU ARE THE GURU, & A GREAT HELP. Thank you very much. Fabulous site!!!

The appliance guy told me it would have cost me about $200 for visit, service, repair and parts. Instead, I bought a start relay for the compressor for $57 and put it on myself in 15 min.

When plugged in, the compressor never kicks on. It just clicks.

If the compressor is getting hot then the compressor is gone. But the price on a relay is fairly cheap so you can at least try it and if it doesnt work then return it and dump the unit. But like I said before when a compressor gets hot it means that the piston is bad and the rings are burnt and the oil is bad in the compressor.
