I am not familiar with your particular TV but I have sets from 3 different makers that all handle the problem you describe a little differently via the remote provided with the TV. One uses a Format button that allows you to go through each picture type as you press the button until you find the one you like best. Another has a Pic Size button that uses a pop-up menu that allows you to use the arrow keys to scroll through each type. The last one and most limited in choices requires you to go into the Menu from the remote and make changes through Settings or Setup to change the picture. Hopefully this may help.

The screen has colored vertical lines and becomes to a dark black band about 6 inches of width. The tv is exactly two years old by today.

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display problem (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

Further info, pics, comments, and updates on my Facebook page at

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further solution updates will be on my Facebook page.

I can't get the zoom to decrease on my tv. is it a problem with the tv, or the cable box?

This is the TV. Look for an aspect ratio or picture size or other wording button on the TV's remote control and READ your TV owner's manual. John

Input from the TV or a DVD in standard width is automatically expanded to fill the wide screen. I would like to disable this feathure so that the picture is not distorted.

you need to find the picture format setting on the tv and set this to AUTO so that when the transmitted picture is 4:3 or standard it will show the 2 black/blue blocks down each side of the screen.
depending on IF your tv has this option. normally pressing menu will give you a picture option or some times there is a single button press on the remote.for example the sony tv is normally the blue "teletext" button.

Cannot set screen width

Both the TV and the Cable box have Aspect(height/width) settings. You must confirme the setting on the cable box and then do the TV.

1. Set TV to Native, this should show image exactly as the cable box sends it.
2. change Aspect settings on the cable box until you get one that works
3. if you get a good one, then your OK. You will just need to find a setting between the 2 devices that work for you. Also, these settings may change automatically for the TV or cable box based on the channel

Picture to wide

This trouble symptom picture wide or"blooming", the picture becomes dim even with the brightness control full on,and there is an abnormal enlargement of picture or raster.Usually, the enlargement is uniform, but there may be some defocusing. In some circuits, the brightness control operatesin reverse(rotating the control for an increase in brightness produces a decrease) after reaching a critical point on the control. If the picture wide is not accompanied by insufficient width(a symptom of horizontal output failure) the probable cause is a high volatge circuit ony, particularly the HV rectifier and HV winding.Any circuit problem that reduces but does not completely eliminate the high-voltage output to the picture tube second anode can cause overscan. The most likely defects are leaking high-voltage capacitors, defective high voltge tube rectifiers, leaking high voltage leads, defects in high voltage circuit protective resistance, and shorted turns in high voltage winding of the flyback transformer.

Hope this may help you;

if you have a wide flatscreen tv it could be that the picture size is in the wrong mode. under the mode button on your tv remote should be two buttons labeled wide and zoom. try pushing these buttons to adjust the tv screen size.
