I just got an ipad 3 and when I try to set up gmail account it does not show gmail as an option in the list

The only reason I can think of for your iPad not signing into Google when your Mac can is that the credentials being entered are not the same in both cases. The username should be the same as this is easily checked at each machine when you are on the log in page. The password is different as it is usually only shown on any screen as dots or asterisks. If you have saved the details on each machine then I would suggest that you check the usernames are the same and then change your account password using the Mac and the instructions below.
Log in to your Gmail account, click on the cogwheel to the top right of the window, and click "Settings" Click on the Accounts and Import tab and the password options, including changing the password are the first options on the list.
Having changed the password you can log in again from the Mac and then try logging in on the iPad using the new password.

If your Google password is being rejected when trying to create or integrate a Google account into an app. Your Google account has to be firstly accessed on a PC, you'll need to go to your account and select the word " security " at the top of your account page, once there you should see on the top left side "app password " and beside in blue the word " settings ", click on settings enter your password, you should see a list showing apps that have access to your Google account here, at the bottom of the list there is a selection ( " Select App" on my "Select Device"). Click on "select app" scroll to the bottom of the list that appeared and select " other (custom name)", in the input point type in the name of the iPad app you wish to us to access or include in your Google access list, once typed you should see the "generate" button become brighter or accessible to click, click it to generate the password for the app, you'll use this newly generated app password in the app your trying use to login to your Google account with, just enter your email account as requested, and when a password is required, enter the newly generated password as the password. You can use Mail to access a gMail account. It works best with POP mail but may work with IMAP mail as well, although many prefer using another web client for that (search the app store for alternatives).
To set up a gMail account in Mail, you open 'Settings' (from desktop, not from Mail), choose 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' and there 'Add Account'. You can now choose 'Google' and set up your account, which wil show in Mail afterwards.

Maybe, try setting-up a second Gmail account, then send transfer) your emails from the old username account to the new username account. If this works, then either try deleting the messages from the old gmail account and transfer the messages from the new gmail account back to the original gmail account ... or ... just delete the old gmail account if you successfully transferred them to the new gmail account.

what you may want to check is see if the ipads default account is set up as your husbands account or yours. to do so go to.....
SETTINGS>>MAIL, CONTACTS, CALENDARS. Its the 12th tab on the left. Once you hit the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" tab you'll be able to set different option and what not. If you go down the the settings for the "MAIL" option you will see "DEFAULT ACCOUNT" Tap that tab and Make sure your husbands email account is the one with the check mark on it. hope this helps

After creating new account on google.com.tap settings on iPad,tap mail,tap gmail to delete old account..tap mail again on top left then tap add account,tap gmail then enter info for new account.
