SOURCE: Discs I have recorded I get the disc can neither be played nor recorder, and it erases what I have already and already watched.

I have the same unit. Similar problem but mine does not erase the disc. It says disc error on almost all dvd that are store bought and kicks them out. Will play almost all of the ones I recorded on it and finalized. I must let a disc in it at all times or door will not open. Lots of bad stuff on the net about this unit. It is a lemon! Mine is out of warranty and sony wants $175 to fix. Saw some blogs where it was serviced 3 times and still not right. Buy a new one before investing in the unit you have as there are many gremlins in it! Sorry I cannot offer specific help but this is where I am at!!

SOURCE: sony dvd rdr gx300 failure to delete discs

You can delete titles on a DVD+/-R, but it will not free up disc space. These are not "rewritable (RW)" disks.

To reuse discs, start with a DVD +/-RW. Be sure to format it "VR," not "Video."

SOURCE: disc error

Try using a lens cleaning disc (any brand). You'll find them at Wal-Mart in the electronics section, or even in your grocery store, probably near the cameras.

SOURCE: Can't get rid of dirty disc error message at 1 min

Ok you might need to have it cleaned professionaly worse comes to worse have the lens replaced, something ether got on the lens or the laser is not reading or writing correctly. Can it be fixed? Sure depning on the problem inside I could not tall you 100 p[ercent as I have not looked at the unit.

You might want to take a gander inside and see if the lends is not dirty.

SOURCE: Disc Dirty

Reportedly, the WR/R drives that Sony installed in these and other similar models have a technical defect. They will work for about a year or so of moderate use and then start having problems reading the disk. Eventually they quite working entirely. Internally the drive is removable and looks somewhat like any other computer DVD drive. Unfortunately you can not just replace it with a standard drive from your local Best Buy store. It is a proprietary drive with a special cable and firmware on the motherboard specifically intended to work with their own equipment. If you contact Sony tech support they WILL NOT sell you a new drive. They don't allow consumers to repair their stuff, you have to send it in to their service center where they can charge you up the wazoo to fix it. When one of these units dies the best solution is to go on line and find a refurbished unit to replace it. New ones are about impossible to find because they are being discontinued, and buying a "used" one will be questionable since it already has who knows how many hours of use on it already and will just develope the same problem. A refurbished and repackaged unit will be the same as new but with a factory replaced drive.

Cannt play/record DVD's - keep getting "no read" error sfter inserting disk - nothing works - tried brand new discs to record on and even a new movie on disc! How do I correct no read error on...

Depending on the formats of the discs you tried, and assuming they are the correct ones for this machine, it sounds very much like a defective DVD drive and/or software within the unit. If it is under warranty take it to an authorised service agent/workshop for assessment to see if it needs a new drive or not. If it isn't reading any discs, and the unit is brand new, it would most likely be the drive which would be at fault.

Emerson EWR 20V5

Jan 17, 2009
I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution.
Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time.
Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.

E-4 54040990 Cannot record on this disc

I had this problem with my Toshiba DVR16 recorder; I was unable to format new DVD-RW discs even though old ones worked fine.

Initially I thought the laser lens was dirty, but no amount of lens cleaning helped. Then I thought the rated disk speed must be to blame, since it was some 4x disks that first presented the problem. But then I tried 2x disks and the problem persisted. So some aspect of the manufacture of these disks must have changed in recent months.

Anyway, the solution I discovered was to perform an 'erase' operation on each disk using a program on my PC called ImgBurn. This is a free program, which can be downloaded from imgburn.com. Just select Tools > Drive > Erase > Quick. Once that's done (it only takes seconds), take the disk out of your PC and pop it in your DVD writer, whereupon it should start its own format routine.

This has worked for me on 3 different brands of disk (Sony, Memorex, Datawrite). Which is just as well, as I was on the verge of throwing the DVD recorder out of the window. Hope it works for you.
