Hey friend, thank you for your inquiry!
Based off the information you have provided your Frigidaire refrigerator is displaying "5Y CE". I have researched that code and believe it is an error code of "SY CE" which means a communication error after power up. I would recommend resetting your refrigerator and you can do that by disconnecting power from your appliance for ten minutes.
If that does not help correct the issue it could be a faulty main control board or user interface board. I would consult with a technician to come out and provide an accurate diagnosis. I hope this information is helpful. -Matt
Thanks, Matt. Solution worked on our Frigidaire Gallery FGHC2331PF7 that showed that same error msg (but no alarm) after a very cold night/possible power outage. We just rolled it out from the wall, unplugged it for 15min, replugged it & it immediately went back to its normal Freezer/Refrig Temp display. Glad to not have to wait for a repairman--we are snowed in!

So it looks like anytime there's a problem with this Frigidaire they're just going to tell you to buy a new control board or call an electrician that's the answer for everything I'm assuming oh and unplug it and plug it back in no matter what's wrong with it that's what they're going to say right maybe it's just your light bulb that went out maybe she just replaced the light bulb no they're going to tell you to get home electrician cuz that's what I told him I said well I don't have any lights on the left side they didn't tell me to get any light bulbs they told me that I need to get a new main diagnostic board or something but that's what they're going to say every time so I don't even know if it's a but that's what they're going to say every time so I don't even know if it's a real

the thermistor is most likely bad. you would have to take an ohm reading of the thermistor and check the tech sheet to see if it is in range. The thermistor is $50 to $75 part.

Success!! I just bought a Frigidaire Gallery series side by side model # GLHS39EPJW0, in Canada. My temp readout was in F and I would like Celcius. The hidden button between the readouts I could feel, but it didn't work. However, holding the Fridge readout "up" and then pushing the Freezer readout "up" three times switched me from F to C on the fridge side. I repeated this but pushed the freezer "up" twice and the freezer readout changed to C. Thanks for the info - it helped out when Frigidaire couldn't.

Same problem with Frigidaire Gallery model#GLRT182SAW5 (dated 2002 on back of case)
Vents were blocked with ice. Vents (from top compartment to lower) located behind light. You can check by poking a chopstick up the (2) holes; be careful not to hit fan blades.
Solution:
- took freezer coil cover off in back; checked that defrost heater element was working (marked and rotated the timer in the hole next to light); checked that fan working. Found ice in the vents and defrost drip area. Got it out with hair dryer.
- cleaned compressor coils in back (check fan is rotating; also tweaked some of the compressor tubing bends to make them more smooth - read somewhere about a manufacturing defect ...); blew out drip tube from defroster while down there.
- Set the freezer control to WARM and the refrig control to COLD (THIS SHOULD IMPROVE AIR FLOW FROM TOP TO BOTTOM).
- Put thermometers in top and bottom. Checked that refrigerator cycles (not running continuously). Checked that cold air is coming down from (2) vents behind light.
OK: so far, so good. Lower compartment is 40 or under. Top is under 18.
CONCLUSION: Suspect marginal design. Had problems with another similar model where defroster ice doesn't drain correctly, pools and refreezes. Leading to blocked vents as well as blocked defroster drain and similar problem including dripping water from top to bottom and warm bottom.
MAYBE KEEPING THE FREEZER CONTROL AT WARM GETS AROUND THE PROBLEM?? ANYWAY, ITS WORKING FOR ME FOR NOW !!

Your Refrigerator Has a main controlboard located in the rear of the machine. This Controlboard sends power and reads the user information. if your user display (Temp Control panel) is not working it can only be 2 things The user display or the main controlboard.
As far a the refrigerator working without it, I would not trust it.
The clicking noise is a relay on the main control.
Usualy when I here this relay go on and off rapidly, there is a problem whith the main controlboard.
The big problem with this is why did the main control go out ? some other componet on the refrigerator could be the cause. A comon cause in the past has been the evaperator fan motor.

This is technical unit an they can be pretty touchy with power outages sometimes. It may be in a display mode. If you havent already try unplugging the unit for a minute or two and plug it back in. This doesnt reset its programming try holding Energy Saver Key + Lighting Key for 8 seconds and let the unit run thru a self diagnstic test and hopefully it will reset. If neither works its going to have the main board replaced.

Thank you for your post, Carol!
I understand that your Frigidaire refrigerator is displaying an error code of "5Y CE". However it appears that "5Y CE" is an invalid error code. I have noticed the code of "SY CE" and that means there is a communication error at power up. I would recommend performing a reset on your refrigerator and you can do that by unplugging the power cord for at least ten minutes. If that does not correct your issue it could be possible that there is an issue with your main control board, wiring harness, or user interface board. I would then suggest having a professional technician out to perform a proper diagnosis and repair. This will help you avoid any unnecessary part purchases. Hopefully this is helpful. -Matt
Hi John Dirksen- Could the error code possibly be SY CE? If so, it typically means that the unit has detected a communication error at power up. A professional will need to check the wiring between the main control board and user interface. Depending on the diagnoses from the professional either part may need replacing.
