IPod charges but won't sync

My third-gen iPod Nano has synced perfectly in the past, but now for some unknown reason it will only charge. I've gone through everything the Apple website suggested- the five Rs, putting it in disc mode, resetting my comuter, reinstalling iTunes and more. I think it might possibly be a hardware problem though, as the iPod doesn't show up in My Computer where other USB devices do, but my technical knowledge is sadly lacking so I'm really not sure. All I do know is I can charge it to listen to my old music, but the new music I've downloaded is staying on my computer.

SOURCE: ipod not recognized by computer or itunes

i had this problem with my shuffle and had it with my 7G 3rd generation nano. It does appear to be a usb problem, as suggested. i fixed it both time by go to the Device Manager (right click on my computer - properties - hardware - device manager). If your ipod is connected, you will see the apple ipod DRIVER even when you don't see the ipod in my computer or in itunes. Right click on the Apple ipod driver and uninstall it. Then your pc will automatically reinstall the driver because your device is still connected. After that reinstall happens, you should your ipod in itunes. I hope it works for some!!! I think it's almost always a usb problem. My error happens whenever I plug in my ipod when other usb devices are connected. To be safe now, I have to remove all other usb devices before plugging in my ipod.

SOURCE: ipod not recognized by computer or itunes

I had the same problem. The problem ended up being with Itunes not working right. The solution I found was to download the program winamp and download the plugin for apple ipod. Then you can sync and add software thru winamp. After syncing one time it even worked with itunes but I like winamp better, so I synch all music using winamp.

Directions say it charges and syncs. When I

Look at:

"...
Important Note: iPods released since Sept 2008 (e.g. Touch 2nd Gen, 4th Gen iPod Nano and iPod Classic 120 Gigabyte, iPhone 3g and onwards) have an updated dock connector that means older revisions of speaker dock may not be able to charge these newer models of iPod/iPhone. Older docks should play music from these newer models with no problem.
The problem with charging is due to Apple removing support for 12v (firewire) charging on these new models of iPod/iPhone. Only 5v (USB) charging is supported on these new models.

Can I use Firewire to charge? Can I use Firewire to charge or sync the iPod nano?

Unfortunately, the iPod nano only ships with a USB 2.0 cable, which alienates many Mac users who only have USB 1.1 and Firewire ports. Although Apple offers no official support, you can both charge and sync your iPod nano, albeit slowly, using USB 1.1. Or, you can charge your iPod nano, but not sync, using Firewire.
