2003 3.0 lost in lake what to do cheapest way

Hi Wayne,

If you are asking for the cheapest way to salvage a vehicle that is submerged in water so deeply that a tow truck can't get a hook on it, nothing about the recovery will be cheap.

I'm just guessing here, were you driving on a iced over lake?

Your only chance for an inexpensive recovery (followed by an expensive repair, drying out and putting up with 'Sub Commander' jokes) is if you are insured and the lake is used for boating. I'm not suggesting anything illegal but it would be a lot easier if someone else was driving it without your consent that you really don't care too much about.

The boating thing is a double edged sword. If the lake is small there shouldn't be too much of a problem locating it and dragging it to shore.

But if the lake is big enough to have commercial shipping......

Depending how far out it is, it may not be feasible to salvage it. Then depending on location and depth it may designated a 'Menace to Navigation'.

What this means is you can be charged the cost of a setting a warning buoy in place, the cost of the buoy itself and of course its monthly maintenance until the end of time.

How do I happen to know all this?

Without getting too detailed, I had a car stolen by some kids. They decided to go joyriding on the frozen Long Island Sound. Crack. Dive, dive, dive.

Six weeks later I get a call informing me they think they located the car. That its location made it a menace to navigation. That the salvage alone would be $5,000.00 and this was salt water so the $1,000.00 car being salvaged would be junk. They said my other option was a buoy but I would have to pay the costs of maintaining it (presumably to change the batteries and polish the bell) which would be $200.00 a month. Forever.

Luckily I hadn't said a word, sitting there with my jaws agape wondering when I entered the twilight zone.

I chose the third option. Sorry, you must have the number....

Without details from you, anything I respond with is guess work.

Hope you found the story amusing, if not helful.

Best regards

Mike
