Remove your plug first. There are seven screws in the back of the machine, all of them are gold. You should mark where you removed it from so you do not forget to put it back in the same place. Underneath, behind of the presser foot, there is another screw remove that. Now you have to remove (#14) which is your pattern selection dial and (#15), your stitch length dial (pictured in your manual). Very carefully twist back and forth #14, it will come right out. With a screwdriver flip the lock holding the #15 in and pull it out. Lift out the cover slowly.

Rotate the tension dial (which is the dial furthest to the left) right or left to adjust the tension.

these are the best setting i have found for sewing through thick materials, specifically leather and vinyl:
top tension- between 8 and 9 bottom tension- between 4 and 5 stitch length between 3 and 4 stitch type: 2
that is just what works best for me, i have a brother xl-2600i
