Drier still runs , but lint screen is stopped from fully going down into its slot
I had this problem as well. I pulled the lint filter out and vacuumed everything and it still wouldn't go down. I made sure to clean all the 'tracks' around the edge of the filter, in case that was causing the problem. No luck. I stuck my fingers in and even pulled the interior cover off to get at whatever was holding it up and still NOTHING.
But then I found the problem! The handle where you reach in and pull the filter out has to go in behind the interior vent cover. You have to stick your head in the dryer to see that it's catching. One side of my 'handle' wasn't going behind but resting on top. I pulled out the filter and then I gently pushed on the plastic interior filter cover for a few seconds and then tried the filter again. I did it several times before I got the cover pushed enough so the handle was nesting behind the cover properly.
My theory is that when the lint accumulates it lifts the filter up. And when the filter doesn't get nested all the way, the plastic cover softens enough in the heat that it bends slightly in. After a while, it bends in enough to keep the filter sitting slightly above where it ought to be and you can't get it down in there. I am going to keep my filter space cleaned out regularly to make sure the filter always sits down in there properly. But regardless, I figured it out so I can fix it again if I have to.
Stephen was absolutely right. My daughter and son in law visited and were using the washer dryer. They must have not known that the lint screen was not seated properly while using the dryer. When we tried to use the dryer I couldn't get the lint screen to seat fully. I thought it had to be lint build up so I vacuumed it the best I could and still couldn't get the screen to seat. I spent an hour looking inside checking the parts for a break or even a guide broke or missing. I finally gave up and went to the web and found Stephen's post. I went straight to the my dryer, stuck my head in and sure enough the screen's handle was hitting the lint screen assembly. I bent the plastic of the assembly and the lint filter screen dropped right in. I will continue to re-shape it until it finally stays in place. Since the screen was not seated properly the heat of the dryer softened the assembly's plastic parts and they warped a little but with the filter properly seated it should be just fine. Thanks Stephen!!
Great tip. I did what you said and it worked. Just move the interior plastic a bit and the filter screen dropped into place. Thank you
Thank you!!! This worked and saved us an expensive service call. Just as you said, had to put my head inside the dryer and watch the lint vent going in from that angle. I honestly didn’t know what you meant until I did that, then it all made sense. Such a simple fix!!! Thank you!
Thank you! My dryer is mounted on top of the washer and I'd have never seen the bent cover without a step stool. Such a simple 5 second fix. I appreciate it.
This was exactly what was wrong with mine. I used a mirror to verify it was catching. Once I pried the cover back a bit, the lint screen dropped right in. Thank you!
This was the exact situation for me as well. Thanks for the tip! Adding a picture from inside the dryer to make it more clear.
Exactly this. Thank you! Seems to have happened all of a sudden. Sometimes others don’t clean the lint screen before each load, and I’m sure this is what happened. I ended up taking the whole front off the dryer to reveal lint collected everywhere inside from continuous lint blow-by. I’ve had a wall fire before from a poorly connected vent and lint had accumulated inside the dryer and inside the wall. Definitely important to clean it every time!
Update: I just used a heat gun to soften the grille. With the screen in-place, I used a flathead screwdriver to hold the grille apart while I heated it, and then let it cool with the screwdriver still in there. Back to like it was!

I have a Maytag Maxima, there is a video that shows a lady removing the lint screen housing. There are two Phillips head screws on the front of the dryer and also two flat head screws on the inside holding the housing. Once those are undone she shows that you can lift up the whole housing and clean. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the housing to lift out. But now it's loose enough where I took a long screwdriver and loosened up the built up lint down below that is keeping the filter from going down far enough. Having a good flashlight or better yet headlight is very necessary see what the heck you're doing! Then I removed The Lint with long tongs and then cleaned it up with a vacuum hose attachment. Hope this helps someone!
The lint screen is only designed to go in one way. If the lint screen is not stuck pull it out turn it around and put it back in.
Take lint screen out, look into slot and remove the sock that's blocking it....

Make sure you have proper voltage 220/240V to the back of the dryer, not just the outlet. It is also possible you may have a electronic safety device such as an over temp limit that has opened. This has to be checked with a continuity or voltage meter. These are not resettable but have to be replaced.
