If by "won't stitch" you mean that the top thread will not pick up the bottom thread, make sure you have the needle threaded properly. If the machine is a top loading bobbin, the thread goes in the needle from front to back. Same if it's a side loading bobbin (bobbin faces you as you sew). If it's a front loading bobbin (bobbin faces left of machine), the thread goes in the needle from left to right.

It could be that there is a loose piece of thread, or some fluff which is obstructing the tension gauge. Try blowing around the theading area (or even run the hoover pipe near it to see if you can **** it out). I cleared mine by folding a piece of non fluffy material and rubbing gently between the tension dial and machine.

Good luck

SOURCE: Loose stitching underneath. HOW CAN I FIX!!!!

Sounds as though you may have a burr or rough spot on the hook where the bobbin inserts. Run your finger along the edge of the hook to see if there are any rough spots.I'm sure you're going to find at least one from the time you broke the needle.Once you locate it, remove it with an emery stick or small sharpening stone. Polish it so that it is smooth. Should work okay.

SOURCE: janome straight stitch loose

I don't know if this is the right answer for any of you, but thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. Often this can be the bobbin in backwards. It needs to unwind a certain way depending on the machine. I've heard a phrase for this: Mind your p's and q's which means some wind off to the right like a q, others to the left like a p. Mine has to unwind one way then be slipped backwards into a little slot or it does that loose bottom thread looping and bunching someone here mentioned. It seems everytime I get that problem I rethread the top thread 100 times before it clicks again and I remember it could be the bobbin thread. Either your manual will tell you the correct way, or you could experiment and try one or the other. Once you figure out whether you're a p or a q, mark it on your machien somewhere to remind yourself.

Good Luck and Happy Sewing!

I have a babylock emp6 and it starts stitching the design then stops and says check upper or bobbin thread. THe threads seem fine it stitches a bit then says the same thing what can the problem be?

If your Babylock EMP6 embroidery machine starts stitching a design and then stops, displaying a message to check the upper or bobbin thread, there are a few potential causes for this issue:
  1. Thread tension: Improper thread tension can cause stitching issues. Ensure that both the upper and bobbin threads are properly threaded and the tension settings are adjusted correctly. Check the machine's manual for specific instructions on setting the thread tension.
  2. Thread breakage: Check both the upper and bobbin threads for any signs of breakage or tangles. A broken or tangled thread can cause the machine to stop and display the error message. If you find any issues, rethread the machine and ensure the threads are properly seated in the tension discs and bobbin case.
  3. Bobbin issues: Check the bobbin area for any obstructions, such as lint or tangled thread. Clean the bobbin case and ensure the bobbin is correctly inserted and spinning freely. If the bobbin is wound unevenly or has any defects, replace it with a new one.
  4. Needle issues: A bent or dull needle can cause stitching problems. Check the needle for any damage and replace it if necessary. Make sure you are using the correct needle size and type for the fabric and design you are stitching.
  5. Machine maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance are important for the smooth operation of the machine. Clean out any lint or debris from the bobbin area, needle plate, and thread path. Lubricate the machine as recommended in the manual.

12 wt thread

12 wt thread generally will not work well in the bobbin...

"Aurifil 12wt Thread
Aurifil 12 wt thread is ideal for hand quilting, big stitch hand quilting and machine quilting. 12 weight thread creates a more defined and often primitive look. It's great for designs that use a longer stitch length if using a machine. When machine quilting with 12 wt thread, use 40 wt in the bobbin, increase your stitch length, lower your tension, use Topstitch size 90 needles and stitch slowly."
