I have an old (15 years), lightly used Hoveround MPV. The drive wheel is having trouble centering itself so chatters loudly. How do I fix this?
The drive wheel must be removed from the axle first. Remove the nut holding the wheel onto the axle, block up the rear-end and pull the wheel off the hub. It may take a little coaxing after 15 years, or spray some WD-40 on both sides and tap it, then try again. When the wheel comes off be sure to not lose the "key" that keeps the wheel from rotating on the axle. It's a small rectangular metal piece about an inch long and 3/16 wide that fits in the grooves of the axle and wheel hub.
With the wheel face-down, you will see the bearing in the center of the hub. It will probably appear damaged, or torn to shreds if your wheel is wobbling. Use a philips screwdriver inside the hole to pry the bearing out. Flip the wheel over and repeat the process for the other side. Take the bearing to a bearing supplier to match the diameter...about 3/4" or so. They will cost you about $14.00 for a set of 2. Press them back into the wheel hub, lubricate the axle with grease, and slide the wheel back on the axle. Rotate the wheel to line up the grooves in the hub and on the axle where the key slides in. Lube the key and press it into the aligned slot, then place the washer and nut back on the axle and you are good to go.

There was no wobble in the bearings but once we were started taking things apart we kept going until the problem was discovered. The steering box drive belt was loose. Zero cost to fix. Thanks for your reply because it gave us a place to start.
