I don't really need this anymore, because ADT recently added smoke/fire detectors, but I can't get the chirping to stop - only wires left - hanging from ceiling - white, black and red. Can I cut wires with scissors?
No! Do not cut wires they most likely have 110 volts of electricity in them. The black wire should be the hot wire the white is the neutral and the red connects to other alarms in your home so that when one detects a fire or smoke they all will start alerting "beeping" to alert you and your family of a potential fire in your house. The reason it most likely is chirping is it simply needs a fresh battery installed in it. Open battery door and pay attention how the 9 volt battery is installed and put a new one in the same way. I mention this because it is possible on some detectors to install the battery the wrong way. If you just simply don't want this detector which I don't recomend you should be able to unplug the detector from the connector on the detector itself. I would feel safer having ADTs detectors and your original detectors both.
Look at the detector you removed, and all others that may still be wired in.
They all have battery backup. Although the detectors are hardwired, the chirping is coming from one of the detectors to let you know to change the battery.

The unit may simply need cleaning. As dust and lint will accumulate on the unit and in the senors.
You can accomplish this with a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with). Carefully remove the cover and blow out all the nooks and crannies of the detector. If you can't remove the cover, stick the straw nozzle into any opening you can see and give it a quick blast of air.
The detector may alarm due to the COLD air from the can. But, should stop once it warms back up.
You should clean all the detectors in the house at least every 6 months.
I find it unusual, that there is no battery backup in your detector. What happens if you have a fire during a power outage?

Change the 9V backup battery,with a new one.Push and hold the reset button for a minute or two for the alarm to to go off like about 30-40 sec. for the smoke detector to dectected the 9V backup battery power sourced.The green power LED light indicator will stop flashing also the beeping sounds too.
