a number of issues. Tcc regulator bore worn out, the infamous check ball seat it hammered badly, or/and calibration issues. I have seen all three issues on the same trans - often!
I am not sure but I think you have the 4L30-E tranny, fairly common and fairly read about with problems not shifting. I have the same problem. Not shifting, I changed the solenoids in the valve body, I haven't gotten it back together yet, just did it last week, put 5 qts of oil back in, I am still a couple qts low. But the tranny light is not on any more but I have no go, goes backwards ok, but only has 2nd gear forward. I will let you know what happens when I put in the other 2 qts. I don't feel like taking that thing out again. Yours being stuck in 3rd gear, it is in safe mode, will allow you to limp home but that is it. Or it is low on oil, check the oil when it is hot and in park, running, you just did the filter, it might be low.
Your transmission has 3 shift rails... 1st - 2nd 3rd -4th 5th- Reverse
If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.
