Can you play the Blu-ray movies and others before? If yes, I think that the Blu-ray laser is burnt out and needs replacement.
When PS3 is failing to play Blu-ray disc, it is that the Blu-ray laser might have burnt out. The solution is simple, you can seek tech support from Sony and get a replacement of the laser or directly get a new PS4.

Maybe the blue laser got damaged somehow. You may need to replace it. If you don't want to replace the laser, try ripping the Blu-ray disc and converting the Blu-ray movie to common video files. That way you would also be able to play the Blu-ray movie on your PS3. Here's how to rip and convert Blu-ray to play on PS3: Direct and Indirect Ways to Play Blu Ray on PS3 Respectively

Will it play anything? The laser eye may need to be cleaned. Sometimes the drive will play DVDs but not games, or games and bluray movies, but not DVDs .... in that situation, the bluray laser may need to be replaced

SOURCE: My PS3 won't play PS3 Games

I called Sony and they helped me resolved this same problem...

1. Turn off the ps3.
2. press down on the on/off button on the front of ps3 while turning on the button from the back. DO not let it go until you hear 2 beeps and will show a red light.
3. press the on/off button again and do not let it go until you hear 1 beep, paused, and two beeps. Let it go.
4. There should be a prompt asking you what to do. If you have hdmi, answer all the question yes etc.
5 there should be a menu list asking what you need done.. setting wise..

6. Choose the # 3rd list (not sure how many they were).
7. IF it tells you that your data is corrupted etc.. just click ok
8. wait till progress ends ( if it tells your your data is corrupted again, just click ok again).
9. It's going to do some loading again...
10.. end of restoring and you should see your ps3 menu..

SOURCE: Ps3 won't read certain blu rays

Hi,

The most common reason for the PS3 not reading discs is a bad drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:

store.richspsxparts.com/wiiredvddr

This drive should fix any reading issues you are having with your games, or issues inserting your games or ejecting them (or lack thereof). This is the entire DVD drive assembly mechanism replacement for your PS3 including a new laser. If your discs are not ejecting, or you cannot insert a disc -- or you can insert a disc but it will not load, this is what you need to get your PS3 going again!

When your PS3 in not reading disc it normally occurs for one of two reasons. Either dust has built up on the lens of the laser mechanism, or the operating voltage of the laser has drifted off slightly due to heat and age. Of course, occasionally there are actual failures of components, which cause this, but these are the main two reasons.

Tools required by this guide are (not all are required for all parts however):

1) A normal sizes star screwdriver.
2) A very small screwdriver.
3) A small, flat screwdriver.
4) Some isopropanol alcohol (IPA)
5) A few cotton buds
6) A little mechanical grease. (I've used Vaseline before)
7) A can of compressed air.
8) An oscilloscope.
Cleaning the laser lens
Remove any CDs from the unit and unplug all leads and memory cards. Turn the unit upside down and use the small, flat screwdriver to pop out all the little plastic and rubber screw covers.
Take your normal sized screwdriver and unscrew all the screws.
Try to write down where each part comes from (including the screws as they have to be returned to the same location at the end. Stick them in a tub to keep them safe.
Turn the unit back up the right way, holding it all together. Place on the work surface and gently ease the case open. You may have to tilt the lid slightly towards the front, and slide out to avoid the cd tray.
BE CAREFUL not to damage the eject/power button ribbon cable, as these are very fragile.
Remove the 4 tiny screws from the cd drawer top, being very careful not to cause any damage.
Gently pull the tray away from the rest of the unit by carefully sliding it all the way to the front until it has cleared the lip on the right of the tray. Look for any damage or wear, as this could be a cause of the unit malfunctioning. If you have compressed air give a few little squirts to any places, where you see dust, but you must be careful not to damage the laser lens.
Take a cotton bud and careful place some of the alcohol on it (but not so much that it is dripping everywhere). This alcohol is the same (or similar) to the small bottle of alcohol which is in audio and video cassette cleaning kits. This is probably the best way to locate a source. Locate the lens (the circular glass part) and very gently rub the cotton bud around the lens in circular motions for about 30 seconds, being very gentle. Once done, flip the cotton bud over and dry the lens with the other end for about 10 seconds.
The laser part slides on rods to reach different rings of the cd. These can become clogged up with dirt and dust, making movement difficult. So, take a clean cotton bud and clean the slide rods thoroughly, making sure you get to all parts and give a good clean.
The spin rod controls the movement of the laser and is greased to allow smooth frictionless movement. Clean the surface of the spin rod. If you have some grease to replace with then remove all the dusty grease (or as much as you can) and then apply some fresh grease. If you have no grease to replace with then just remove any excess dirt but try to leave a little grease, as it is required for the mechanism to work.
You have now completed the cleaning process. This often cures read errors and should always be attempted first. Reverse the dismantling process and put the machine back together, making sure you DON'T TRAP the eject / power button ribbon cable,
Power on the unit and try to load both a CD and a DVD game. If all works fine then CONGRATULATIONS on completing the guide successfully.

I hope this help in solving the problem.......

Hope this will help...

Take care.

Won't play a blue ray disc

The blueray eye is out. You will need a new blueray player. The only problem with that is the ps3 will only respond with the orginal parts it came with. ( i.e. motherboard blueray player ) So the best bet is to buy a broken blueray player and take the eye out and replace it with yours just the eye not the whole thing.

PS3 won't accept certain disks. A few disks i have won't play in my ps3. it happens to both blu-ray movies and games, and it seems to only happen with blu ray disks. i'll put the disk in, and...

Hello
The noise is actually a product of dust from a blue ray disc.Over time these discs heat up and leave a residue on the blue ray lens.
Try using a lens cleaner to remove dirt and clean lens.
Also i read an article that using a wireless controler can also cause freezing of the blue ray.

My ps3 slim won't play games and blue ray disk but I can still play eve movies on it, please help want to try an fix if before nhl 12 hits the stores.

Hi, It sounds like there's an error with the laser that reads blu ray media as PS3 games and blu ray movies are both stored on blu ray disks which is read by a different type of laser then a dvd is read by. There's nothing you could do to fix that on your own, the only fix I've heard of is sending it in to Sony.

Look at the back of the box to see it says it is a region one or multi-region disk. Then I would try to play it in another PS3 to see if it will work.

What it sound like even through they put region 1 on the box the disk may be actually a multi-region disk so that the manufacture can press the same disk more.

The problem with this is the PS3 it set to play region 1 only disk. I had not seen this will Blu-ray disks yet but I have alot of DVD Anime titles that say region 1 on the box but the disk is actually multi-regioned.

Note if you are not in region 1 (US) then the same thing would apply to you home region.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

Bought a blue ray movie to try out on ps3 now it asks for an encryption key, wth? i don't hook my ps3 to inter net, but asking for a system software update to renew encryption key to play blue ray

-= Renew PS3 Encryption Key =-

If i was you i wouden update. the latest update sony have provided is causing alot of problems, such as not being able to read blue-ray movies and games. (3.00/3.01)

I know you dont see it this way, but i acaully see you as a very lucky person that you havent updated your machine yet, my ps3 dont work anymore after i updated, or it does work, but it just cant read any blueray games or movies.

But if you have a ps3 slim you probaly wont have this problem, its more older models that suffer under this bug. :(

i dont know what your current firmware is, but if its way below 2.80, then your still in the safe zone, cuz if you own a usb memory stick you can transfer the 2.80 update to ( USB-ROOT\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP ) and then unplug it from your computer and insert it into your ps3 and then try the update from local storeage.

i hope you can use this :o)

This is blue ray lens failure. this optical Assembly has two separate reading lenses. there is one designated for Cd audio and CD_ROM reading and, the other is blue ray compatible. the blue ray lens in inoperable at this point. you will need to replace this lens assembly.
