When folks talk about "pre 64 Winchesters", they mean guns made up to the year 1963 that used diff parts and had diff levels of finishing etc. In 64, Winchester started the new model 94 at serial number 2,700,000 and they went to 2,797,000 or so that first year.

The staples are held together with an epoxy. I have used staples that are older than 10 years. The problem is the gun. Check for dirt or a burk in the magazine as well as a bent pusher blade. My gun also had a problem loosing a screw and nut that attached at the blade guide.
