The blades are very carefully made so that they slightly overlap. This is why on some machines when you turn one way there will be a strip as described. If you ground the ends shorter, they will not overlap, and this is your problem. You should only sharpen the lower cutting side [NOT THE END] of the blade. Make sure that they are evenly ground back, not more near the outside as this will result in a curved cut with low centres and slight ridges in the middle of the blade paths. Also important to accurately balance them. Place nail in vise and put blade so the exact centre of the hole is on the nail, splined blades can be difficult. Maybe necessary to get ring of tube to fit inside spline. Grind off low end until they hang level.

SOURCE: leaving streaks of grass in middle of mower

Your forward speed may be too fast for the mower blades to cut every blade of grass. It may be new, but check the deck to see if there are any dents pushing the quill assemblies up making the deck cut uneven. Or it may have the wrong blades on it.
I have seen this problem in the past with a Gravely mower. The person was trying to cut grass to fast. He sold the unit and the new onwer did not noticed any the problems the old owner described.

SOURCE: deck will not shed the grass

The only way to shred the grass while mowing is to have a pair of mulching blades on your mower, they work, but they wear out fast. They do in Florida anyway with all the sand. And don't for the grass to look a hayfield to mow it. You have to keep at it. Hope this helps.

Are you using the correct size blades. They should nearly touch each other as you rotate them by hand. Also are they attached the right way up. Look at them and the sharp cutting edge should be stained from the grass.. If not turn them over.

I have a Craftsman SL3500 42" riding lwan mower. the two blads make uneven paths ans the left blade makes a cut about 1/4" lower than the right blade. What do I do?

You should be using a up lift blade it will help by sucking up the grass to be cut. You should have an adjust on both sides of the blade deck . As for the strip check to see if you have a wheel behind the mower deck. If you do it might be the cause for mower leaving a strip uncut . Sears has been noted for putting wheels in the path of the blade area and smashing the grass down . That is also why I suggest to use an up draft blade it should **** the grass back up again so you can cut it.

I have a John Deere LA105 Riding Mower and when I mow it leaves a strip of grass in the middle. Left and right sides are cutting fine. I have taken the blades off and shaarpened them and have leveled...

jack the tractor (using a tractor jack) or remove the deck, measure the blade tips against each other where they meet in the center of the deck and see if they are the same tip to tip. Bearing wear, a bent deck or blade can make them cut at different heights in the center.

My 21: self propelled yardworks lawnmower leaves a strip of grass about one thiird from the left hand side of the mower when i mulch with it. When I bag it works good.

I'd check your blade and see if it needs sharpening. The mulching mowers need to cut then vacuum the grass up and then cut it again. They must be properly sharpened for this process to work properly.

I have a Craftsman Lawn tractor. Blade leaves grass uncut.

Hi Tom,
Check your spindle shafts for loose play. If your bearings are worn out and sloppy, the belts pull the spindle to one side and an angle cut results... close cut grass at outer edge and high in center will leave this grass trail you are describing. I'd replace the bearings next year for sure.
I hope this helps... Good luck!

Problem mowing my lawn.

I had the same problem and I already found those recommended solutions\ causes on the web:
1. The motor isn't on full throttle.
2. The blade is upside down.
3. The grass is too high when cutting it.
4. Overlap your cuts.

It helped my problem/ I hope it will help yours too!
