The first two digits of the serial number are the year (2005) and second pair of digits are the month (April).

Boot in to bios and some laptops have serical number in there.
If its a HP laptop may be under security > System ID's

Buy a copy and you'll get a serial number.

Assuming you want to obtain your access code for the radio, and it is the original one. You don't need it. You need the VIN code for the car.

how old is the unit?

Go to the Brands websit. I.E gateway, dell. look for there support or downloads section and do a search for the manual. Example: If its a dell lattitude D610, then you would go to www.dell.com/support and they have a search engine and a little user friendly system that lets you go by make and model or by serice tag number.

If you do a search, type it as Latitude D610 Manual . ( putting in your info of course. alot of time the website for that particular brand will give you a list of everything that meets your search criteria.

Your service tag number for whatever brand of laptop you have is usually a sticker on the bottom that will say

S/N: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ( the x's being the serical number
