Without warning, my Canon PowerShot A530 ceased to function correctly. I turned it on, and it automatically zoomed all the way in. I can now only take pictures like that, and none of the buttons except the on/off and the mode dial work. It was never dropped or exposed to any rough elements, so I'm at a loss as to what could've caused it. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Canon Powershot A75 problems

Having read on a few sites about loose ribbon wires causing problems and having this same problem. I decide to take the camera apart. Taking all the screws out and fidling with the "wires" connecting the zoom control and the photo type selector and the main circ board. I also cleaned the connector from the picture type selector. Then put it all back together the camera works fine again. NOTES... lots of small screws with varying lengths make sure you know where they come from. Took about 1 hour to do.Put back in the order you take apart or the back will not go back on.. Good luck have just saved myself a fortune

SOURCE: Canon Powershot A75 blurred LCD display

It sounds like the focus element in your lens is not functioning properly. Does the lens retract completely when you turn off the camera? When you push the button does the camera attempt to focus the image? If you do not see any change in the image when you push the button, and do not hear any sound - then your focus motor is either jammed or malfunctioning. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

SOURCE: Problems with the battery and the flash on my canon powershot A530

Know this is an old post but... Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mentioned that your batteries weren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. SOURCE: Camera won't power up

Mine was the microswitch that tells the camera the battery / card door is closed. The tiny, cheap plastic protrusion that pushes on the switch broke off. Jam the switch with the end of a toothpick.

SOURCE: Canon PowerShot G2 buttons don't work

You have a bad button board . This is a single board with a series of small button switches that control all these functions. Most repair shop will charge around 75.00 to fix.

My canon powershot A530 WONT TURN ON!!!!

Check the batteries, and if they are bad, replace them. If it has rechargable batteries, just get rid of them and try regular alkaline batteries. That should be the fix.

Problems after repairing a Lens-error (E18) on a PowerShot A530

I think that the lens system is in different groups, which move independently based on a cam system. (This is based on watching the lens move while running the zoom lever.) I would suspect that your "cam timing" is not set quite right. You can either try to correct it by trial-and-error, making only small changes at a time, or send it in for factory calibration.

Zoom won't work

I have had the exact same problem develop with the A530- now twice!

The first time I had to send it back to Canon to fix it. According to the repair summary, what they replaced was, well, the entire control board...not many things breaking can cause the entire zoom/buttons to stop functioning aside from a control board malfunction of some sort.

Anyways, Canon fixed the camera, everything was hunky dory.

For six months. Then the problem developed again. When the same problem occurs twice in a row without any warning whatsoever, that's when I start getting annoyed and consider buying another camera.

So at least in my case, the solution to the problem was that it had to go back to Canon for repairs. I had an extended warranty on my camera, so I can't say how much it will cost to repair the problem. If it happens again like it did in my case...consider buying another camera.
