Try plugging that external monitor back in one more time. This time, with the external display attached and turned on, try pressing Function + F8. The Function key usually has blue lettering, and is located in the lower right corner of the keyboard. This toggle the active screen between the laptop's monitor and the external display. If the external monitor comes up, then the issue is most likely with the laptops monitor. If neither monitor comes up, then the issue could be with your video card. On most laptops, this will be part of the system board, and it may not be cost effective to replace.
