I just purchased a used Hobart model RC-256 welder. I looked at the nameplate quickly and it said 230/460/575v, so I bought it ($200). I live in Canada, so 220v or 230v is single phase here (what I want/need). But when I get it home I see the nameplate also says "3 phase", so now I am wondering if I made a big mistake. Q1: Does the 230 mean 230 3ph. or am I lucky and the 230 is 1ph ? Q2: Is there any way to make it run on 230v 1ph, or am I screwed. - Bob Wells, Pt.Elgin, Ontario
if the plate says 230 3 phase, its three phase only,so the only way to run unit is three phase.sorryif the plate says 230 3 phase, its three phase only,so the only way to run unit is three phase.sorry

There is likely a nameplate with a wiring diagram inside. Without being familiar with the specific model, I can't tell you where. If you can find it, it will show both 460 and 230 volt configurations. Regardless, you will find inside the wiring box (where the conduit comes into the mixer) there are four wires corresponding to two windings - for 460 volts, the windings are wired in series. For 230 volts, they should be wired in parallel.
The transistor is mounted on the main circuit board, you cannot buy the part from Hobart or Miller, they only sell the complete circuit board.
If you can read any part numbers from the transistor you can purchase the part from a electronic parts supplier.
Are there any numbers on the diodes. If so, do a web search to find cross reference and supplier. You can use any brand diode if it matches current and reverse voltage specs.
I am having the same exact problem on an old Hobart Beta Mig 200
sometimes i can weld for 5 minutes and other times as soon as I hit the trigger it trips the 50amp breaker. Any help?
Hobart machines now belong to miller brand, you can use a miller gun M15, no need for adaptors it's a direct plug connection. Praxair stores carry a cheaper gun under prostar label a 150amp gun will cost you around 150 bucks.
Hi, remove the machines cover with the machine unplugged then look for disconencted plugs etc within the machine. careful where you place your bare hands.
Some welders control wire speed with the amps control, some control amps with the wire speed control. You might try turning things up until it runs smoothly without pushing back. If you're new at welding, it does take some practice until it feels right.
