The AC inlet needs to be replaced, there are bad solder connections on the PC board for the inlet, or the traces are cracked on the board. I have seen all of hte above over the years for these types of units. The power board can be puirchased for $28.11 using part number: A-1124-986-A from tritronicsinc.com.

I don't have the part number for the actual inlet at teh moment, but I'll try to locate that number for you as well. Check for poor solder connections or a cracked trace first and update this with the results.

SOURCE: We need to buy a replacement power cord. Where

Radio Shack. Verify on the back on the radio if the connector has two circular plugs or if one is circular and the other is like the shape of the letter 'D' and let Radio Shack know.

SOURCE: I lost the power cord to my Sony CFD-S350. How do

Your local Radio Shack store sells all types of replacement appliance cord sets. Since you lost your cord and didn't just damage it, ideally bring the radio (or a photo of the power jack on it if unable) to the store so it can be matched. There are several different types - and some look very similar - but won't fit properly.

I hope this helps!

Sony cfd-s01 boombox radio

Hi Bart,
You will find there is a specification plate on the rear of the unit.
It should have a rating on it showing the wattage of the unit. This is usually the amount needed to operate all the functions of the boombox.
The wattage is your input voltage multiplied by the current draw in amps. So the amperage is the rated wattage of the unit divided by the input voltage.
Usually all power goes through the transformer, so I would use this input amperage as a guide, and assuming there is no power loss, use the same calculation for the output - you know it is 9 volts, so the wattage going to the unit is the same as the input wattage, so you can calculate the amperage from this.
Transformers usually work on AC input/output, so there will also be a rectifier to convert the AC to DC for your boombox.
I would add 10 - 20% above your calculation to make sure you have sufficient power. Also I suggest that you install a fuse between your transformer and the boombox for safety.

Radio plays with batteries but when power cord is used the display says check battery.

Hi,

Connect the power cord to the radio without the batteries inside, i mean remove the batteries from the radio, and see what it will display.

Questions:
1. Does the AC cord look ok? Not damaged?
2. Have you tried another AC outlet?
3. Does the AC cord unplug from the radio?

When you operate the radio from the AC power cord, the radio uses an internal power supply consisting of a step-down transformer, rectifier, and filter that converts the AC to DC to operate the radio.

When you run the radio off of batteries, it powers the radio directly. In some radios, when you plug the AC cord into the radio, it activates a switch that disconnects the battery voltage to the radio so that the batteries wont be damaged from the voltage created by the internal supply.

The radio can be powered by either the batteries or the internal supply. You don't want either supply affecting the other, so that is why a switch is sometimes used.

Since the radio works fine off of batteries, that would indicate that there is a problem with the internal power supply. This could be a blown fuse, bad transformer or bad rectifier diode.

Good Luck,
- Jim
