Most TVs will un-mute when you press the mute button again. Each press it - you cycle "mute to un-mute" and "un-mute to mute".
Some STB (set top boxes) like those from some cable tv companies provide volume changing capabilities. If both the TV and STB volume is set very low or mute - no sound will ever be heard thru the TV speakers - so make sure both are set to a value the is audible.
Lastly, make sure the TV is set to use the speakers that are connected. If it supports external speakers, but you do not have those connected, be sure that the TV set up menu reflects that only internal speakers are to be used. If you have external speakers - make sure they are indeed connected and that the wires have not been damaged - or try with the internal speaker option instead.
