I would see if there was an adapter harness for the stereo to your harness first. When you replace the factory stereo, you will loose many functions the radio controls. You will loose chimes, you can't reset oil life and other things. It will take a scanner to reset or change certain options. $90 to throw a scanner on a vehicle where I work. The radio you get has about 12 wires to it. The factory harness has about 20. Those extra wires are data lines. You don't want to patch into one of them. And some of the data wires are the same color as speaker wires. Also if it has an amp in it, that is additional wiring that has to be done. The aftermarket won't run it.

Hi Chad,

If you cut the car's radio connectors off the wiring harness, you'll void the warranty of the car (or worse). Trying to splice or "tap" the wires will get confusing even if you don't connect the blue wire with the white stripe to the white wire with the blue stripe.

Do yourself a huge favor and purchase a wiring harness adapter for your 199 Passat instead. Crutchfield sells one for your car for $10. Likewise, most electronics stores that deal witrh mobile installs have them too - check out Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's and even your local independent radio shops.

You wire the new radio's harness to the harness adapter for the car in the comfort of your home (the light is better and you don't have to contort yourself to do the work). When complete, bring it out to the car and plug one end into the car, and the other into the radio. Insert the antenna plug and you're done wiring!

If you want a wiring diagram, those usually aren't available online for free. You need to spend a few dollars for a Chilton's Auto Repair Manual or similar at an autoparts store. You may find registering at a site for Passat Enthusiasts will be beneficial.. all the folks there have Passats and discuss everything from tire sizes and rims to transmission rebuilding. One such site is the "Forum" section of Passat World.

The install diagram indicates the Audio Interrupt wire goes to a Vehicle Phone. If you don't have one, don;t connect it to anything andmake sure you put tape over the end so it doesn't touch ground or a power source.

In cases where I don't have or cannot get a wiring harness adapter to plug directly into my vehicle wiring harness I have a trick I like to use. I don't like to cut and remove a vehicle harness socket, I may want to keep the aftermarket stereo when I sell or trade and put the original stereo back in place. Instead of removing the socket I skin back (but do not cut) the wires I need to tap into and wrap the aftermarket unit's wires around the now exposed socket wiring, then solder each one & wrap each one individually with electrical tape. This gives you a secure connection and when and if you need to permanently remove the aftermarket unit you just untape the wires, clip the fatermarket wires off one at a time very close to where they are tapped in, tape each one of them again and there you have the factory plug ready to plug back into the factory stereo.

Try chrutchfield.It is easy to spend a couple of bucks for a adapter.Then you just wire the radio an plug it in to the factory harness.You can also try any local box store that installs radios,they will have the adapter harness.Well hope this helps.

the easiest spot to tap into would be up at the front turn signal trying to find the correct wire in the factory harness where all the wires are together is going to be really tough to do if you pull the front turn signal out and use a meter it should be fairly simple to find the positive wire there.

You will need to go buy a wiring harness adapter from your local Walmart (usually cheapest there) or Local Electronics place (ie Best Buy). The wire harness that goes out from the radio goes into the Adapter and the adapter plugs into the car harnesses. Also these Adapters come with the wiring diagrams for your vehicle. They typically run 10 - 15 bucks depending on where you get them. Thanks for using FixYa!
