Highly possible that the belt is slipping and you will need to replace them, In the first place remove the back cover and check the movement of the drum , if there is friction you will need to check the bearings and the drive shaft. If you observe a slack belt or one which move freely when tugged, then you need to replace it.

Severe vibration/noise during spin cycle. What could the problem be and how do I fix it?

if the machine was run severely out of balance (rugs) you'll need to get a look in the back up near the top with a good flashlight , this involves unhooking power and hoses and turning it around , you may have broken a drum suspension link , this device (three) keeps the drum from contacting the shell , if its true and its allowed to run this way you will brake off water hoses on bottom of drum and water will runout on floor

FOUR HOURS TO WASH TOWELS

That is not normal. Have the control circuit board tested for continuity. Either the cycle or timer section is out of wack and may need replacing.

When the machine is almost complete with the water draining cycle and starts to spen faster to dry the clothes, a knocking sound is heard then the machine slows down. This continues until the drying cycle...

This may just be an unbalanced load. Does this happen all the time? Is this a front or a topload unit? Try running a load with just a few light items and see if this happens again. If the light load works then you are overloading the machine. Reduce the number of items you put in. Don't put in single potentially heavy items like sweaters, coats or blankets with light items. Good luck.

My washer is very loud when it is in the spin cycle.

if the machine is more than five years old or it gets a lot of use it sounds like the drum bearings are starting to wear. If it sounds like a jet taking off when it begins to spin then thats your problem. Basically bearings have seals which over time and use will eventually allow water in and the bearings will start to wear. Now is the time to get the bearings done before they seize. It can be a laborious and expensive job

Kenmore heavy duty 2 way tumble washing machine

You may have a broken inner tub spider. Check for play between the inner drum and the outer tub by moving the inner drum up and down.
If there is excessive play, the spider is broken causing an unbalanced load and therefore no high speed spin can be achieved.

In this case the inner drum would need to be replaced, which means taking the machine almost completely apart. A good tech can do it in about 1.5 hours.
