I had this same problem today!
Here's what heppened...
I had created a new folder, copying all my music from my mp3 player to it. After about 2 GB of copying, it stopped and stated the corrupt data error. So i freaked out and tried everything i could think of, but right now, in my seepy stupor i tried the one thig thats the most obvious. I just dragged the folder to the trashcan, and BAM... Problem solved!
Hope this helps?!? =D

Hello there architect_ce. Let's see if we can get you just the right GEEK-steer you need.
"...it says its unreadable..." I presume by this you mean:
1. It mounts and shows up in your "My Computer" and/or "Disk Management" console [Start > Run > type "diskmgmt.msc" (without quotes), then hit Enter].
2. When you attempt to open the drive (by clicking on it) you then receive that "unreadable" error message (probably something like "drive is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.")?
Is this your situation? If so, you need to recover all one-of-a-kind, doesn't-exist-anywhere-else, need-to-have, can't-afford-to-lose data off that failed drive by copying it to another known-good drive (or network share if available). But of-course you probably already know that. With that said, you have four courses of action to (hopefully) get this accomplished. Progressively do the following until you get some joy:
NOTE: Self-swear yourself to the opening passage of the Physician's Hippocratic oath ... "Above all, do no (more) harm". By this I mean, don't bump or jar the drive. Treat it as if it were a delicate piece of crystal.
1. Perform a "Check Disk" (aka scandisk) on the problem drive.
2. No joy? Try this peculiar, yet surprisingly often successful, home remedy:
Where DRIVE_LETTER = the letter assigned to the problem drive. EXAMPLE: chkdsk G: /F /X
3. Still no joy? Next is the more traditional software approach:
Get yourself a solid performing data recovery software application designed to do just this task. There are MANY to choose from. I've used SpinRite with moderate success in the past. However, since you probably do not have a software currently, I would recommend relying on the latest performance comparisons and choosing one based on that. After all, anecdotal opinions (even my own) do not supersede competent, well conducted evaluations of the LATEST/CURRENT versions of a software. Refer to http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/.
4. Still no joy? The only potential remedy left is paying for the expert services of a data recovery professional.
You said the problem drive contains "...all of my back up and impt files...". Does this mean that at least some of the data contained on it are indeed backups, and therefore the originals are on another (source) drive? If so, don't redundantly spin-your-wheels recovering files you don't need to. Especially during the freezer method, as time is of the essence recovering what you can, as fast as you can, before the drive warms up.
Lastly, but no less important: Please, please, please let this be the last lesson you'll need for the rest of your life about the vital importance of backing up ALL essential data. By backing up, I mean it must simultaneously reside in at least two separate drive locations. Placing originals on your backup designated device does not mean it's backed up simply because it's your backup device. A word to the wise is sufficient. But don't beat yourself up too bad. Virtually everyone has to go through this at least once in order see the light. Hell, there are many who never heed the painful lesson. If you learn it the first time, believe me, you're doing better than most.
GOD-speed and good luck. Please let me know of you have any further questions, and/or just to let me know how things worked out.
"Today's the best day of my life...and NOW you're part of it!"
SOURCE: How to Connect Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 320Gb to PC
I have one as well running along with a PC. PCs and Macs are formatted differently. Go to www.maxtor.com and create a search for reformatting from a Mac to a PC with your Operating System in the search as well. Should have no problems after doing that. It will tell you and or show you where and how to reformat.

Hmmm What software do you need?
You should not need software to run the HDD. Just plug it in.
You can get the One Touch software from Seagate (who no own Maxtor) See
