Compressor stops before building pressure

When i start my compressor, it works just fine, but before even builds pressure the thermal protector trips, should i replace it? or what its the problem?

I would bypass the thermal safety and test the unit. Does it go to proper pressure? run it through two cycles. If it looks good, reconnect the temp sensor and use it until a new one can be obtained.

Cheap oil-less compressor, normal.
If you don't like it, buy one that uses oil and a drive belt.

SOURCE: Compressor builds pressure, but does not shut off

Hitachi builds a very nice compressor, however suffers from the same problem that all brands will eventually encounter. Failure of the pressure switch. The pressure switch is a very hard working component of the unit. Depending on use, the pressure switch may cycle from as little as two or three cycles a day to as many as dozens per hour. The pressure switch has springs, contacts and unloader features that eventually wear out. The two most common failures are the contacts and the rubber diaphragm that acts against the springs to shut the unit down. Sometimes the screws securing the base of the switch the inlet port come loose and cause the problem that you are having. (The rubber diaphragm is between the base inlet port and the switch) Simple test is to spray soapy water around base of switch to check for leaks. Replace the switch as necessary with a SquareD brand available at www.grainger.com instead of factory unit to save money and increase life. You may have to make simple modifications however the money saved will be worth it. Choose a pressure switch with cut-off range between 120-139 psi. The higher the cutout switch setting you choose the shorter lifespan for your compressor. Your compressor works harder and gets hotter when achieving higher pressures. Try to use either no extension or shortest cord possible to max life of unit and compressor oil instead of motor oil to prevent carbon deposits. Your problem falls into one of two categories the first is the tank is leaking the second is the compressor is leaking. Try this run the compressor for a minute or two and turn it off if to hear a hiss the tapers off slowly your tank is leaking some were check the drain on the bottom of the tank, the pressure relief valve on the top or side of the tank and all other connections between the compressor and tank.

In the event there is no hiss this means the problem is the compressor you may have a bad reed valve or a bad check valve depending on the type of compressor.

SOURCE: pressure switch out of adjustment

Before you adjust the perssure switch, make sure that the intank check valve is not leaking pressure back to the pressure switch after it cuts off at 140psi. The check valve should hold pressure at 140psi. Follow the discharge airline to the tank to find the checkvalve (either chrome or brass with large cap). To check for leaking valve, run compressor till shut-off at 140, then unplug the compressor from wall and remove the 1/4 air fitting at the checkvalve and check for leak. If leaking, replace valve and leave the pressure switch at present setting. You should be good to go. Good Luck with your repair and email if you have questions.

PRESSURE SWITCH IS BAD. NOT ADJUSTED CORRECTLY, POINTS ARE STUCK/WELDED TOGETHER OR THE NIPPLE UNDER IT IS CLOGGED. DRAIN PRESSURE AND REMOVE PRESSURE SWITCH. KNOW YOUR UNITS PSI AND TAKE THE SWITCH WITH YOU TO MATCH. IF YOU WANT TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER BEFORE YOU BUY, LOOK IN THE SIDE OF THE SWITCH AND YOU WILL SEE THE POINTS. THEY SHOULD BE TOUCHING WHEN ITS SUPPOSED TO RUN AND SEPERATED WHEN ITS SUPPOSED TO CUT OFF. HOPE THIS HELPS, JODY

We relocated our Sullair 3700 about 30m from air receiver, due to excess dust. Now the compressor never stops running, trips on high pressure yet the receiver is not achieving the pressure required

would say dust has done something to do with it
before you had time to move it

will need the compressor serviced

first ..in simple words
to replace the compressor pressure shut off /turn on valve
that should fix the pressure trip build up limit problem

and maybe a partial strip down to clean out the casing
if dust build up is noted

My air compressor just stopped working completely,has power to it and can turn the fan so its not seized but was gonna start by checking the reset relay and what appears to be a capaciter. just looking for...

The first thing to check is the thermal protector (circuit breaker). It is a small black button mounted on the housing on the back side of the pump motor. The unit will have to cool down before the button will reset. Usuall causes for the thermal protector to pop are: running the compressor on an extension cord, running the compressor on power lines or circuits that can't carry enough amps to run the motor, or little or no oil in the compressor causing excessive friction and heat buildup. If the thermal protector isn't tripped the next thing to check is the pressure switch. If the springs inside are broke or damaged they won't trip the switch to turn the compressor on. If the capacitor(s) are bad the motor will hum and/or try to turn but not have the power to start spinning.

Sounds like the unloader valve is not working properly. The unloader typically is at the end of a tube going to the pressure switch. The unloader is tripped when the pressure switch cuts off. The purpose of the unloader is to bleed the pressure from the cylinder when the compressor cuts off so the next time the compressor cuts on it will be starting in an unloaded condition.
when the compressor cuts off you should hear a discharge of air for about 3 to 5 seconds if the switch is working properly. The unloader can be adjusted if necessary by loosening the jam nuts and adjusting the unloader towards the lever on the pressure switch.

Husky comp on 1st start builds up 75 lbs and wont restart

Check the reset button on the motor to see if it tripped. The motor may be overheating. Some motors have an internal breaker and they have to cool off before they restart. Also check the pressure switch. Move the switch back and forth ( on and off ) and listen for a click. If it doesn't click with low to no air pressure then the switch is bad.

Motor will not start

I had the same problem and the solution was to manually press the thermal overload button. The button is located under the tool box next the motor head. I do not believe I tripped the thermal overload during use, but I suppose anything is possible. I’ve been using the compressor in sub 40 deg F. temperatures. I found the following in the Owner’s Manual, but had to look at the part manual to locate the switch.
MOTOR THERMAL OVERLOAD
PROTECTOR: The electric motor
has a manual thermal overload
protector. If the motor overheats
for any reason, the thermal
overload protector will shut off
the motor. Turn pressure switch
to the “off” position and wait for
unit to cool before pushing the
reset button and restarting the
compressor.

It is definitely with the compressor. It should more like you may have a weak winding in the compressor, you can a hard start capacitor (sp5 ) that will help the compressor on restart. Note that this is a last chance solution for a compressor.

Electrical unit attached to compressor keeps making a spark(clicking sound) Fridge & freezer slowly stopped cooling during the day and is now down to 0 cool.

Overload thermal protector is tripping out. When a mechanical refrigerator is unplugged it should remain unplugged for 5-10 minutes to allow the refrigerant pressure to equalize. If you unplug it and then plug it right back in the overload will open on and off until the pressure in the system balance to the point where the compressor will start.

This protector is a two way protector. It opens on Over current and or over temperature. If a condenser is plugged with dust , hair or what ever the fan which circulates the air for cooling the system will not move enough air to keep the compressor with-in operating temperature range. The thermal protector will open.
