call them again and demand to talk to a service technician and get a talk through for the fix
you could always find a virgin shop and have them fix it there and get a refund for lost data time

Could be that your audio jack has material stuck in it or possibly the jack is bad.

Considering all of these answers are talking routers and the original post is asking about MOBILE TETHERING none of them work, good effort guys but read the post properly first

4 days of not being able to access Facebook with my Virgin Mobil LG Rumor touch, I finally talked to an IT person that had me download "Opera Mini" and she stated Virgin Mobil is no longer using the original Apps that came with the phone. Now I go thru Opera Mini and there is a square for Facebook.

It sounds like your device may be paired with a Bluetooth headset. Try turning off bluetooth connectivity and see if that fixes the issue.
