Yes, it would appear gmail assigned you a new account.
To Delete the NEW account from Google:

  1. Sign in to the NEW account at accounts.google.com.
  2. At the top, click Data tools.
  3. In the Data Tools box, click Delete products.
  4. Click Remove Gmail permanently.
Now, to get into your OLD gmail account through your new smart phone, you first need to delete the NEW gmail account from the phone. I do not know what kind of phone it is, so I suggest you go into the store where you purchased the phone and ask for assistance.
Apparently, incorrect selections were made while attempting to put your OLD gmail account into the phone, and Google assigned you a gmail account based on your name. It is similar to the old account name.
The specifics of your phone's operating system prevent me from knowing how to properly help you. But it's obvious you need to delete the NEW gmail account, install the OLD gmail account, so when you tap the gmail icon, you get what you want. The people who sold you the phone will be able to help you the best.
Sorry I couldn't do more.

Request a pwd change for your old account so that you can sign into it and then either close the new account or just don't use it!

I have a suspicion that the smart phone automatically changed the configuration of the address because it identified an account already in existence - and when it made that assumption - it blocked the already existing account from use - as I don't think you can have more than one account with the exact same info - I believe because there would be a conflict of delivery with incoming and outgoing mail .
I assume you used the same password when you set up the smart phone - or if you didn't have to enter a password - and the smart phone assumed it - I believe that is what created the conflict. Contact Gmail and they should be able to walk you through the steps of retrieving the original configuration on your account.
hope that works for you,

Graham

When you create a gmail account it usually asks you to add another email account as your recovery account just in case you forget your password.

When you try to login to your old account, select forgot password, and either it will as you to verify your identity or it will send the password refresh to your recovery email. It may have been an old email account you used before.

once you recover your password, you can either can replace the account on your phone, or just add it to it, because remember, any contacts you've save will be on the new account.

So be careful not too loose contacts. you may have to log into the new account, export contacts to computer, and import them back into old account. after then you can add old account to phone and remove the on the phone originally.

Next time, set a password recovery option. Google allows setting a cell phone or alternative email address to assist in recovering lost passwords.
