It can also read historical data, what was happening when it stopped running. Limp Mode is just there to protect the engine from further damage. There is probably a sensor failing somewhere, although the battery depletion is a puzzle.

My first thought is that you have a broken shift cable. Your car has a transversely mounted engine and transmission. The transmission is operated by 2 cables that run from the shifter to the back of the transmission. A broken cable, or one that has come loose will prevent the transmission from shifting gears. Your problem is either at the transmission or under the console at the shifter. The first thing I would tell you to do is have one person be under the car (with the car off) while you or someone else move the shifter around. Look for movement at the transmission side of the linkage ( 2 levers located at the rear divers side of the engine) If there is no movement, you need to remove the console and gain access to where the cables attach to the shifter itself. Most likely you have a failed cable.

This is an internal transmission failure the check engine light along with the D4 light flashing and the slipping is telling you this. What happens is the clutches internal in the transmission fail and no longer hold pressure and cause the transmission to fail triggering the check engine and D4 light.

When the S3 (Transmission) is blinking on the dash, you need to stop trying to start your car and give it a few minutes to chill out. Then turn your key to "on" but without actually starting your car. Put your foot on the break and begin to move your shift up and down slowly. This will insure that you do not have a stick between the engine and the transmission. With the car "on" but not started, continue to move the shifter up and down a few more times. Put it in neutral, with your foot still on the break, and start the engine. This will not work permanently, but will get you from A to B for a little longer. Its most likely the transmission switch failing.

There's a problem with the transmission, get it to a shop right away and have it checked out. It could be a simple fix and may only cost a little, if you continue to drive it like that, the transmission will fail. The two lights are probably related.

You need to have it scanned for codes. The flashing overdrive light means it has trouble codes that pertain to the transmission.

It may be possible that your Park Neutral Position Switch (PNP Switch) is getting ready to fail. The switch is located right on top of your transmission and is connected to your shifter. This is a common problem. I doubt that your entire transmission is failing, because that is rare with the S70 line. Has your check engine light come on? The check engine light can be triggered by the failing PNP switch. You should take the car to a autozone if you do not have a code reader to see if this problem is sending a code to the computer. If you are unsure where the port is for the code reader, it is located inside of the center console armrest and has OBD II on it. It will same something such as Transmission position switch failure....if I can remeber correctly when it happened to me. If it displays this message, then it is definitely the PNP switch failing. If the PNP is failing be careful. Mine failed failed when I pulled into a parking space and as soon as I put the car in park, the check engine light came on my and the red arrow started flashing. I thought something had gotten wet and I decided to turn the car off for a reset, however, it would not let me start the car, because it thought the car was in some other gear besides park or neutral. The overdrive light blinking indicates a code has been stored in you computers transmission control module, the cost will depend on the problem, some have had problems with the torque convertor clutch slipping, could be more major, get the code pulled out and I can provide you with a more complete answer. -Jared
