Is the belt put on right. If not the blades might turn backwards. Check and see if the blades are turning clock wise. They should be.

SOURCE: I have a Craftsman GT 5000 Garden Tractor, 25 HP,

Depending on your engine.. Briggs and Stratton or Kohler there are 2 different seat switches that are used to power the PTO clutch. The seat switch can cause the PTO clutch to disengage anytime there is not at least 70 lbs in the seat.

The PTO drive wiring has a 30 amp fuse in it. If by chance a stick went through the belt and tore off the wires at the PTO clutch (Common failure) even after you repair the broken wire you still need to replace the fuse.

Check the PTO clearance gap. It should be 0.012 dis-engaged. Any other value and the clutch will not work correctly. Adjust the clutch if necessary.

There is a 2 pin Pigtail just off of the PTO Clutch that you need to check for voltage at the connector. Probe the back of the wires if you can and your looking for 12V DC under the following conditions.

BRAKE ON or tied down
KEY ON
SEAT (Briggs and Stratton engine only) Someone needs to be sitting on the seat.

Then Pull the PTO Switch out. You should hear the PTO Clutch CLICK. If you hear the click there is no need to check voltage. The PTO switch is a multi function switch and it is quite possible the PTO switch failed. I doubt that the PTO Clutch has failed as they normally give you some kind of noisy indication that they are failing and don't fail straight away.

So.. In short
Check PTO Switch (Red wires) to usually red or brown thru the switch
Check 30 amp fuse
Check PTO clutch wires near PTO clutch (They get torn from something traveling through the pulley)
Check PTO clutch clearance at 0.012
Check Brake switch for an audible click as you depress it some distance No click.. possible bad switch
Listen for Seat switch Click as you slowly add weight to the seat. No Click or any click and it can still be suspect due to the Briggs and Stratton installed engine ones have more than one function.. Ignition and PTO clutch power.

The actual wiring diagram is on page 35 of the owners manal that can be found here:
http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/27245/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn,-Tractor-L9910386?brand_name_search=917273023

Lastly... check each of the mower deck blade bearings. A seized bearing can cause PTO problems.

Hopefully you have enough information to solve the mystery. If not just respond here and I will help you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

SOURCE: craftsman riding lawn mower won t cut grass

Does it die when you attempt to engage the cutting deck? If so the you might have a clogged fuel filter, bad gas, dirty air filter, bad spark plug.
Or the mower engage switch may be faulty. They are located in different places on different mowers. But should be attached somewhere along the main pivot of the engage lever. Let me know if you need more assistance. Good Luck!!

How does the govener and carb linkage work on a Troy-Bilt 2005 800 Series (839) self propelled mower

Have you changed springs? Likely the correct components are there unless you have changed it. Does it run properly and at correct rpm when not in tall grass? Check for proper throttle adjustment first. also check for obstructions (packed grass for instance) under the deck that could be impeding the blade. Lastly, if you have the discharge blocked with a mulch plug, remove the plug. let the tall grass discharge. then run over it again and mulch it.

Troy-bilt riding mower won't move in forward or reverse

I had a similar problem with my TroyBilt 50 inch zero turn mower. Was cutting grass when it stopped going either forward or backward even though it would start and the PTO would move the cutting blades. Turned out the tensioner spring for the belt that drives the motors near the rear wheels had gone missing. Searched the yard where I had cut and moved the machine but couldn't find it. A new one cost me about $7.50. Put the new one on and it worked fine.

I have found this on many husqvarnas around this model. A grass build up between the chassis and the second skin above the steering quadrant. lower the cutter deck, get on your knees on the left side of mower and reach up behind and into the back of where the clutch shaft goes into the chassis. The cavity is about 1 1/2 " high. Remove all packed grass.

Mower deck clutch cable removal (model 917.28722). Detail provided in manual does not seem to match product. Need to remove this in order to remove deck and replace belt. Belt has squealed since new.

You should not need to remove the deck or the clutch cable just to change the belt.

  • ensure mower clutch lever is in the off position
  • lift the front of the tractor approx 24 or more inches.
  • lower the mower deck as far as it will go
  • locate & remove the cotter pin from the right (discharge) side mower lift arm where it attaches to the rear of the mower
  • release the lift arm from the mower deck to allow it to drop (it will hang from the other 3 points)
You should now have plenty of clearance to change the belt. Remove the belt from the engine pulley first and replace the new belt on the engine pulley last that will make it easier to change the belt.

If this is helpful please vote yes, Thank You!!

Tractor belt slips so blade doesn't cut

There is an electrical clutch that drives the belts. This clutch may be worn. Some will have adjustments that will allow it to tighten them up and not slip. Now when your tractor is running and you turn on your blades there is power sent to this clutch, it is mounted on the engine shaft and has flexible metal plate that is pulled into a pulley buy an electro magnet this plate is worn or could be full of grass/dirt. You need a good strong light, with the tractor OFF, get under and look at this clutch, look for grass/dirt or if the metal has changed colors meaning it has gotten very hot. If it has gotten very hot it is time for a new clutch... Sorry if this is the case. Good hunting.
