I am currently having the same issue with my Maytag A482. Not sure if you have found a fix yet, or if you have replaced your washer. My washer runs fine until it nears the end of the cycle, when it begins to spin and shake violently, enough to loosen the leveling feet and rock back and forth. I pulled the front panel of the machine off (two screws near the base in the front, and two clips at the top) and ran a load through it. It ran fine until the end, when the machine started shaking violently. I did notice a few small pieces of roundish felt looking material sitting on the bottom, which after some research looks like it may be the damper pad. I found these online:
Damper pad 203956
Replacement Damper 203725 for MAYTAG Laundry Appliances A482

I am hoping this will resolve the issue, I will order them this afternoon and install them once they arrive. I really hate to replace such a good washer with a new high efficiency unit, which all seem to have terrible reviews after a few months/year of use.

Update: replacing the damper pad fixed the shaking. Washer runs smoothly again without any issues.

On something like this you will need to remove the washer wrap to inspect the suspension springs & base assembly. Please see the link provided for accessing the inside of the washer. Be sure the shipping pins have been removed. The tub should float freely.

A washer can have self leveling legs at the back. If they are rusty or clogged and not free to move, they will not self level and the machine will rock when working. Check the leveling apparatus, it's a bunch of metal pieces going across the lower back of the machine. Spray them with a lubricant and move them to make sure they are free.

The washer shakes violently then the off balance sensor trips when a load is in the washer.

I had this washer at one point in time. was not very happy with it, even though i sold it to alot of my customers. usually if the machine is shaking violently it means one of a couple things. first make sure your washer is properly leveled. if it is make sure you washing the same types of clothes in the load, no mixed loads of towels with shirts. if your problem is not that then you possibly have a bad clutch. which will cause the tumbling wheels to spin during your spin cycle as well, its a costly fix so i would consider a new front loading maytag/whirpool if that is your problem. remember this machine was designed by maytag, since then they were purchased by whirlpool and everything is on a whirlpool platform now. if you do purchase a new washer and have the matching dryer to your neptune TL, it would recommended to replace the dryer as well, considering the capacity of these machines are smaller then most of the new high efficiency machines on the market today.

Strut testing on Maytag Neptune TL FAV6800A

Check damper pads then replace if necessary. These pads prevents the washer from violent vibration. It is located beneath the main support housing on the base of the washer.

Maytag Top Loader Thumps When In Spin Cycle

My guess is that one of the three counterweights have separated from their support. Probably rusted away.
36 years is quite a feat. Today's machines would be lucky to 1/3 of that life.
Sounds like its time to go shopping.

Front load washer shakes violently during spin cycle

I had this problem as well. I called dealer and Maytag. They made an appointment and stood me up several times.
I finally went to place that sells refrigeration equipment and bought an anti-vibration pad. It's a 12" square waffle pad used under large equipment to prevent them from vibrating loose on connected piping. I cut it into 4 pieces and put one under each corner of the dryer. Problem solved, in fact it worked so well that I stacked dryer over washer, placed pads between units and have not had a problem since. I also gained a lot of space in my laundry room as well.

Samsung P801 Front Loader shakes violently during spin cycle.

When the washer goes into spin cycle it is suppost to start at a slow speed and continue to increase speed (to a maximum of 800 RPM) as the water leaves the clothes. Your washer is going directly to 800 RPM which causes the washer to shake and stop giving you the E4 code. The control board that controls this speed increase must be replaced.
