Hi there i have a strange icon in one of my radios

this is strange as most times if a proper transmit key is depressed , then the radio switches from receive to transmit , the mfg know this would cause some great squeal from receiver /transmitting so close to a receiver so the part that is the receiver is muted to keep this from happening , id say there is some fault in the part that does this muting of receiver

Strange. Could it be any of the radios are from different countries? The channels are not worldwide. For instance, Canadian radios are on different frequencies than USA radios. They look identical.

Are you SURE that your batteries are up to snuff? I.E. when they have a light current load on them they are ok but as soon as you try to increase that current load they die off quickly. With two-way radios, the actual current drain depends on whether you are transmitting or in standby (receive) mode. Transmitting requires significantly more current than standby mode. So, I would look at what kind of batteries you are using. If they are a good name brand alkaline, check to see if they measure close to 1.5 volts with a voltmeter or check them with a battery tester to ensure they are good. If they are ni-cad or ni-mh rechargeable batteries, make sure they are rated at least 1200 mah (milliamp hour). I use Sanyo eneloop rechargeable batteries. They last a long time for me. One other thing, make sure your battery compartment is clean and there is no corrosion on the contacts the batteries are placed into.

Thats a strange problem. It could just be the dock, but you can get a whole new XpressEZ and car kit for the same price as the dock here:

Most Motorola radios give a beep-beep when the batteries are low and need changing. Make sure to use a good brand of battery. One other thing to check for is leaking batteries, the crud with cut down on performance.

The head set is stuck in Transmit. try shutting off the radio and then plug in the headset then turn on the radio. some radios can since the presence of accessories but the accessories must be connected before powering on the radio.

There could be three (3) reasons why the display shows the battery icon at the top left side of the LCD display:
1. weak/undercharge/discharge batteries;
2. dirty/corroded/loose battery contacts/terminals; and/or
3. internal fault with the electronic sensing for battery level/state.

Corrective measures would require:
a. replace/recharge batteries. The rechargeable batteries need at least 12 hours of charging time;
b. clean, scrape, tighten (need to bend a little more towards the battery terminals) the spring/contacts of the battery holder;
c. (on the internal fault) your best bet might be to seek the services of a professional electronic technician since this would need familiarity with electronic components, their circuitry and diagnosis, perhaps a bit of soldering and the use of a DVM.

On the other hand, if the "low" is the "L" icon at the bottom right side of the display, this would indicate that the radio's transmit power setting (H/L - high/low). Transmit power level can only be changed in Channels 1-7 & 15-22. The radio will also auto change to lo power when batteries are weak.To switch to high power, press on the Menu button thrice or till "Pr" icon shows, press on the up/down to select H or L. To save & exit, momentary press the PTT.

The sound produced by a Motorola radio when the mike is keyed refers to the "Transmitting Call Tone" which is another feature other than the "Interference Eliminator" or the "Roger Beep" feature.

On most Motorola GMRS/FRS TalkAbout radios, setting the "Call Tone" to 0 disables the feature. This is done with the radio ON by pressing on the "Menu" button 3 times which will result in the display showing the current Call Tone setting (flashing) and the letters CA; pressing on the <- or +> buttons will change selection (you will also hear the different Tones), select 0 (it may be up to 5 or 10 depending on the version). Press on the "Menu" or "PTT" button to set, save and exit.
