SOURCE: what is the average price for the Sony Vaio
Briefly:-
The Sony AW models only came out in October 2008, whereas the AR series started back in early 2007.
There are a great many AR models, and you can judge their degree of sophistication by the last letters of the model numbers. As I remember these last letters are E, M, S and Z, E being pretty basic and Z most highly featured.
The S and Z models tend (but do check this!) to have higher screen resolutions, viz 1920 x 1280 or something of that sort, whereas E and M have fewer pixels. The hard disc sizes vary from about 300 to 640 GB, going up the scale, and also the graphics cards vary, the best possible (on the Z models) being NVidia 7600 or 8600 GT.
All the AR laptops are big, about 3.7 kg weight, with 17" screens. They all have 2 gigabytes of memory apart from the very latest S and Z models, summer 2008 onwards, which have 4 gigabytes.
ARs now (March 2009) are officially discontinued, but you may still find them on line. Prices range enormously, from about £600 to about £1600. They were very well reviewed in their time, though some people disliked the keyboard, which is rather small.
The AW series so far as I know includes only 2 models, one at about £1400 which is very similar to the Z series AR except for being quite a different shape - widescreen, 18.6 inches diagonal and abou 1000 x 1900 pixels - with a higher spec graphics card, NVidia 9600, and another which is similar but about £1000 dearer, because it has a partly solid state disk.
That information is the fruit of my own recent exploration of this topic - I ended by buying a Z series AR. Hope this helps!
