Audio Cassettes make clicking noise, but do not play on my older Aiwa CX-naj24, how can I fix this?
The drive belts are probably dried out and need to be replaced
I thought this was probably the issue. Do you access the belts from the front of the stereo, or from the rear? Did not see screws or how to open from front. Would like to replace myself when I get the belts. Also, how exact (measurement-wise) do I need to be with the belts? Should I take them out first and measure them, or just order a pack of 10, variously sized? Anyone?
It's been years since I've replaced them, but if I remember correctly you have to get at them from the back. You will have to take off the front panel, then remove the cassette deck assembly so you can get at the screws that hold the motor on. You have to take the motor off to attach the new belts.

SOURCE: aiwa cassette deck won't eject
I had this problem on an AD-S40. Turned out to be the drive belts, which had stretched, resulting in the fact that the motors couldn't drive the mechanism through it's various load cycles of opening/closing the captain roller, etc. as required to operate the mechanism. Stuck in mid-cycle, the doors would not open.
After removing the case cover, you can turn the belt driven wheels by hand to complete the cycle, so that you can eject. Then get new belts (several outfits sell belts based on length, on line). You don't need to do much to replace the belts -- after unlocking and getting the tape out, it was only a couple of screws to remove the mechanism, as a unit, and there is no need to fuse with the circuit boards and such. Easier than I expected.
SOURCE: How to play CD on Aiwa NSX-3500 (part of CX-N3500U) w/o remote control?
I thought that I had the same problem. I then discovered that when I put 3 CD's in it started up on it's own. If you push the demo button you can see how it's supposed to light up the number of tracks in a square on the right of the display. It wasn't doing that until I put in all 3. Then it started up and I was able to use the disc 1, 2 & 3 buttons to change from 1 CD to the next and I used the Up and Down buttons to change songs and the play button above the tape deck is multi-functional. Hope this helps.

These are the early signs or optical lens assembly failuer. i would start preparing to replace this assembly. the tracking motor and rail are damaged.

Your system is in 'Eco' mode. If you are in this mode, and go 10 minutes without playing a CD or cassette, it will automatically turn itself off.
Here's how you get out of 'Eco' mode:
1) Go to the jog wheel assembly
2) Press 'Eco'
3) Press 'Enter'
4) The display will show "Eco Mode On"
5) Immediately turn the jog wheel, to turn the status from 'On' to 'Off'
