If you press the new button and it doesn't start a new file it is possible that the little microswitch is broken from the circuit board. I have repaired about 10 of these on ds-4000's If you have patience and can use a soldering iron it is possible for you to repair it yourself. You have to take the back cover off first and then the front cover. Then you can take the function knob off. All of these come off with removing little screws, from each assembly. This will get you to the switch and you can look at it to see if it is broken from the circuit board. If it is broken from the board(usually 1 leg of the switch ) you can resolder it to the circuit path. All you need is a small needle point soldering iron and some thin solder. You may find these at a Radio Shack near you. Or
You can also sedt it to Smoltz business products they repair these models. I do not know what they charge but they are very good at repairing these units

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product. The cost is $96 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.
You may want to call Olympus Customer Service to discuss how you send it in to them for repair. Their telephone number is 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3.

Olympus DS4000 recorder "new file" button broken

This is a classic: the 4-position-slide component (which includes the NEW button) is the weakness of the DS-4000. You need to get this replaced. If you are UK based, contact BES in Luton who will charge you circa GBP70 for the replacement.

Picking up dictation where we left off after playback DS 40 voice

Unfortunately with this recorder, if he hits the stop button and rewinds it will go back to the beginning of the file. He may want to look at our DS-2300 or DS-2400 recorders as they both have a feature on them of a NEW button which will allow him to stay in the same file until he presses NEW to create the next recording.

The slide switch on my Olympus DS-4000 digital dictation recorder is too sensitive, and often goes to the "Record" position when it should be "Off." Any suggestions in how to correct...

The slide switch on your Olympus DS-4000 probably needs to be replaced. You can ship it to PCDictate.com to have your Olympus DS-4000 repaired. The repair will most likely run around $100,

However, my suggestion is that you upgrade to the Olympus DS-5000 digital voice recorder, the replacement for the DS-4000. It is a substantial upgrade and you will not regret it.

If you want to consider another brand, Philips has some great digital voice recorders. My favorite models are the Philips LFH-9600 and Philips LFH-9500 professional digital voice recorder.

The best place to purchase professional digital voice recorders is PCDictate.com. Your recorder will be shipped the same day your order and shipping is free.

How do you edit a recording on an Olympus DS-30 dictatation machine. All I want to do is record over what I have dictated but the machine just creates a new file everytime I press the record button again....

Unfortunately with this recorder it is not possible to edit over a previously recorded file. Each time you hit record and then stop it will create a new file each time. That's the way the recorder is designed. If you need to be able to stay within the same file you may want to check out the DS-2300 or the DS-2400 as it has a NEW button on it that allows you to stay within the same file until you press NEW to start a new file.

Editing? Can dictation be paused, then go back part way and....

you can not do this with the Olympus ws-100, you need a dictation machine that has the editing function which allows you to easily insert, overwrite, partially erase files and continue on the same file, most of the digital dictation units have NEW FILE BUTTON , you will stay recording on the same file till you press new.
Look at Olympus DS-2300. Olympus DS-33300 or ds-4000.
