You have mis wired the control wires, N1, N2, T1, 194 & 23. Somewhere you crossed the low and high voltage wires

Error code E8 appears mid wash, heater is working ok, machine has been hooked up to the hot water instead of cold. I have since directed cold water through water valve.

hot water form the house takes less power to bring up to machine temperature so by hooking it to cold water will increase the power consumption
call a service center and get the explanation for the error codes and that will explain what is faulty
you didn't mention the make and model of the unit and every error code appears different
for example in a fulgor milano machine code 8 is failure of orientation of distributary valve ===causes open circuit or break of distributary valve
for hoover nextra e8 is dishwasher has failed to heat with water in a reasonable time or has failed to detect the water heating element===causes check water heating element/wiring--check wiring to main control module
go google and type in-- dishwashing machine error code 8-- and see if there is any site for your machine to get the error code and causes
other than that get in a service technician for a correct diagnosis and fix

56 reg passat driving down motorway suddenly loss

code p 2099 refers to post cat converter fuel trim (FT) bank 2---too rich===causes--- cat converter
also refers to engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor---circuit malfunction===causes wiring ---ECT sensor
It is possible that th engine is flooding either from problem injectors, excessive fuel pressure or the ECT is reporting incorrectly so the ECM is adding fuel as if the engine is cold starting
It is hard to decipher the rest about oil something or other so get an accredited service shop to install an mechanical oil gauge to check the pressures
