There is a spring in there that makes it recoil. It has probably broken. Depending on who made the engine you can get a replacement for the whole assembly. A small engine shop should be able to replace it for a not a lot of money.

How to recoil the spring on a pull start cord for a craftsman pressure washer model # 580 750 400

If no repair manual. It could be spring is broken. So I'd look for spring, and instructions to install spring. That should give you a good idea. I suppose the handle came off and lost the rope inside? Probably need new rope too. Same kind of instructions would apply in how to recoil if it's not broken.

Remove the recoil from engine. Once remove try recoil. If it recoils properly then I am afraid that you have internal engine problems. Hopefully its your recoil

Stihl chainsaw MS460 Can't pull recoil

It could be the recoil is stuck. a couple of things to check. Take the clutch and chain cover off, remove the spark plug and manually try to turn the motor over by turning the clutch. If the motor/engine is not seized, take the pull start/recoil cover off and pull on the cord to see if it will work and that the cord returns back into the recoil automatically. Don't take the nut off the inside of recoil holding the cord spool on. If the engine is not seized, and the recoil now goes in and out by pulling the start cord handle reassemble and pull over the engine a few times. This a good time to check the spark plug is working, now put the spark plug back in and start the engine. It's a good time to clean the air filter as well while the chainsaw is mostly apart and clean all oily sawdust off the chainsaw in the crevices etc..

Pulley cord wont go down unable to start on gas trimmer

Your cord wont recoil?

You should remove the recoil cover and see if you can rewind the rope manually.

It isnt too hard and will let you know immediately if you need to replace the recoil.

Just the recoil unit by loosening the three or four bolts and lift it off the trimmer. Turn it over and look at the recoil spool. There should be a notch in it. This is were you catch a bit of the starter rope and start turning it in the direction of normal rotation. Normal rotation will put tension on the recoil spring.
When you put 4-6 turns into it just let it recoil and see if it pulls all the rope back in. That's it. If the cord didnt recoil something inside the recoil has broken and you need to get the unit serviced or replaced. Most of the time the cost of repairing something like this is prohibitive. Its a better idea to just replace the whole unit.

Good luck and be careful!

Air leaking out of trigger and drive pin wont recoil it will shoot one nail then drive pin wont go back you have to unhook airline and manually push pin back.

To fix this problem you will have to disassemble the gun to get at the trigger area. Look for a broken "O"-ring. This is probably jamming the recoil of the drive pin.
