WA5471AB Top Loader - purchased March 2012 - extensive rust around the plastic bleach compartment, the lid hinge areas and beginning around the metal edges around the glass top. Appears the raw cut-metal edges did not receive any anti-corrosion treatment. BTW - the instructions specifically state that the Bleach compartment is for liquid chlorine bleach; color-safe, non-chlorine bleachs should be added to the detergent compartment.
Samsung does not recommend the use of chlorine bleach in this machine. The bleach port is intended for color-safe bleach only. Chlorine bleach is an oxidizer that will accelerate the corrosion process of the drum, which is what you are probably seeing. The users guide for your machine states specifically that you SHOULD NOT put liquid chlorine bleach into the bleach port.
My manual states to use ONLY Liquid Chlorine Bleach.
Well, using the model information listed in the question, here is the excerpt, direct from the manual.....

Your Washer has separate compartments for dispensing detergent and color-safe bleach and
fabric softener. Add all laundry additives to their respective compartments before starting your
Washer.
The automatic dispenser MUST ALWAYS be in place before you start your Washer.
DO NOT open the automatic dispenser when your washer is running.
•
Never exceed the manufacturer's recommendations when adding detergent.
•
This compartment holds liquid detergent for the main wash cycle, which is added to the
load at the beginning of the cycle.
To add detergent to the automatic dispenser:
1. Open the dispenser drawer.
2. Load the recommended amount of liquid detergent into the detergent compartment before
you start your wash.
3. Close the drawer slowly and smoothly to avoid spilling, splashing, or premature dispensing
of the contents.
It is normal for a small amount of water to remain in the dispenser compartments at the end
of the cycle.
Do not put chlorine bleach in the dispenser drawer.
