If the smell is somewhat like sulphur, a nipple from a nat gas line was installed into the water line when the water heater was installed. If this is the case replace the nipple and the smell will go away

We bought a Rheem Performance 40 Gal.40,000 BTU NG PowerVent TankWaterHeater 2mnths ago 7the WELL water smelled bad.rod replaced.worked for 2mnths, now it smells again.Any additional advice?

It is unlikely to be the hot water heater causing the smell, it is more likely the input (the well water) having excess sulfur, bacteria and/or organic material

Because it sits in the tank longer, the smell accumulates. If it is a bacterial source, the hot water tank may be a breeding ground for anerobic bacteria. Draining and doing a disinfect with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is the easiest and safest step

Is it normal to smell a faint gas smell near new installation tankless water heater. Installed yesterday.

no
gas smells indicate a deadly situation as an explosion and fire from the build up of gas is a very real possibility
get in a gas fitter with a gas detector to find and fix the leak

What could be the problem causing the rotten egg smell in the water? We have changed the anode rod.shocked the well.no sulfur. We have kinetico softener. Use iron out salt. Water heater 2 yrs old.

Some water softeners you can increase the back wash time on the unit to clear out a smell or bad taste , rotten egg smell can be sulfur. You may need a well flush but seek a well company on that for there advice as its not cheap .

When a electric water heater smoking and it gits turned off at the breaker box will there be a chemical smell after

No. A water heater is a sealed system it needs to be addressed for the original problem. High sulfur content has been a complaint as far as smell, and I remove the anode and replace with a brass plug because of. Shallow wells in the area largest complaints.

About every two months the the hot water gets a sour smell. To get the smell out I turn both elements all the way up for 3 hours then drain the water heater, its good for about two months. The water heater...

The smell is from bacteria. The high temperature kills the bacteria. Some regions require water heater temp to be set at 135 because of bacteria.

A test to determine if only the water heater is causing problem: Turn off water to water heater. Smell water coming out of cold tap. Turn on water to heater, smell water from hot tap. If only hot tap smells, then water heater is suspect.

Another way to handle the problem long-term, is to reconfigure cold water pipes so you can regularly pour in 2 bottles of hydrogen peroxide during your flushing procedure. Pour in the hydrogen peroxide and let it work for a while. And then flush tank as you have been doing.

You should read up on anode rods also. Many people replace anode rods when tank begins to get odor.

Hot water smells

Hello,
The anode rod can affect the smell of your water. They are often different materials depending on where you are in the country... if you have magnesium then change it to aluminum or vice versa...

Sulphur smell

you can remove it but this will not fix your problem, you must cut the cold side pour in about half gallon of bleach ,drain heater of a gallon and a half first, then pour in bleach wait one hour then use as normal. you will have a bleach smell for some time but this will make the egg smell disapate.try this it worked for me.

Atwood heater problems

The smell is from the (anode rod not sure of this term is exact) in the water hater. Smells like rotten eggs. You have to remove the rod in the top of the water heater. This will void the warranty of the heater. The soot is due to flame adjustment. this should be done by a professional.
